County thaws hiring freeze
Security chief sought to manage new policies

Suzanne Adams
Miner Staff Reporter

KINGMAN - The county is looking to hire a security coordinator for all of its buildings.

According to the job description posted on the Mohave County Human Resource Web site Friday, the security coordinator would develop and implement the security standards for all county buildings; coordinate security personnel; investigate any accidents that might happen on county property; set up security parameters for meetings; inspect county properties for security or safety risks; suggest ways to reduce safety or security risks; monitor Workman's Compensation claims processing; prepare reports and more.

The person would also "deal constructively with problems which may be controversial or sensitive in nature."

The county is looking for someone with five or more years of investigative experience with some work on civil cases. The person must be able to apply modern law enforcement and investigative principles and practices and would report directly to the Risk Management Department in the County Manager's Office.

The job is nothing new, according to the county.

"It was budgeted for three years ago," said County Public Information Officer Darryle Purcell. It was frozen along with several other unfilled county positions in 2007.

The county still has a hiring freeze in place due to its limited budget. Purcell declined to say if the opening of the position was related to recent events involving new county policies requiring gun and security checks of everyone entering the County Administration Building.

The security check policy along with policies against handing out political material on county property and a dress code for the public were approved by the Board of Supervisors March 1.

The policy against political activities on county property was written after residents questioned why Golden Valley resident Luca Zanna was asked to stop handing out flyers before a November town hall meeting held by U.S. Sen. John McCain.

The security check policy was created after resident Mervin Fried was arrested for attempting to bring a pitchfork into the administration building after a political protest outside the building on Feb. 16.

I see that the reference to the Risk Managers brother's application have been omitted from this blog. Is that an error or government censor. By the way is his application still in or did they finally look at the their rule against nepitism. Are they ever going to fill this Security Coordinator position????? It was so important when the heat was on.

This sounds like something Ron Walker can take care of on his own.
Forget the position and respect the workers!
To Randy Cone
Good blog. You missed one cut that should be made.
Walker needs a 100% pay cut.
Let him stand in line at the unemployment office.

For the 100's of people out of work it must have been exciting to read this headline. County Thaws Freeze. For the many of US who do have a job right here in the county, it was equally exciting because if the freeze is over, we may be able to get a raise after 2 years.
Instead it was a misleading headline, just like the article itself. I would love to see in writing that this position was budgeted 3 years ago. All of our departments have to cut back 5% which probably means a person's job. But we can hire someone for 44K a year to do the job that the Loss Prevention Mgr should have been doing all along.
And since the county's inception we have not needed all this security. Even after 9/11 it was business as usual. Now some poor schlep comes to the County building with a pitchfork trying to make a point and our management goes WAY overboard. Give me a break.

Just because something is budgeted you think the money should be unnecessarily spent? I am sure everything the state spent money on was "budgeted" too. Look at the state now. Look at the country now. It is irresponsible "budgeting" and spending and the mindset like yours that says "It's ok if it was budgeted" that is driving this country to the brink of bankruptcy and collapse. I am disturbed you think that is alright just because "it was budgeted".

Am I the only one that read the article? This position was originally budgeted in 2007. Or does that fact not fit into your rants?

You just watch, it'll be one of Buster's buddies from Los Angeles or someone Tom "Mockwell" owes a favor to that will get that position. Remember, these are career politicians we're dealing with, they are in it for how it can benefit THEM. Don't forget to VOTE for Change!!!

The big message at the Republican Forum meeting with the Governer was: cutbacks, cutbacks, cutbacks and talk of a one percent salestax to help Arizona make some sort of economic recovery. 5% cuts across the board for everyone.
Meanwhile Ron Walker is in a spend, spend, spend mode trying to flex his authority at Pitchfork Fried.
New expensive lockers and security equipment including a new x-ray machine, and now a $42K security guard.
Can Mohave County continue to afford Ron Walker and Tom Sockwell?
Can the Republican Party afford them come next election?
