17-year-old tries to escape, but K9 unit finds him quickly

KINGMAN - A suspect who escaped police while being booked at the Kingman Police Department Monday is back in custody after being sniffed out by a Mohave County Sheriff K-9.

The 17-year-old male, still handcuffed, was discovered hiding in bushes across the street, about 500 yards from the police station.

The teen had been arrested earlier that evening in the 3700 block of Pearl Street for violating a protective order. He was also found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia after being contacted by officers.

The teen was handcuffed and waiting to be processed when he took off through a side door and across the street, said Lt. Rusty Cooper.

The officer gave chase but lost sight of the suspect. The Arizona Department of Public Safety/Kingman Ranger responded to the area, along with Sgt. Raja Karim and his K-9 Ganto.

Within three minutes, Ganto located the suspect in the bushes. The teen was arrested without further incident and transported back to the Kingman Police Department.

Less than two hours later, another Sheriff's K-9 helped sniff out drugs in a vehicle that KPD had pulled over in the 3500 block of Willow Street.

Sgt. Stephen Padilla and his K-9 Zelig were called out to the vehicle after the driver refused a consent search. Zelig indicated a "hit" on the vehicle, and four small baggies of marijuana were found in an iPhone box.

I love to read news like this, bad guys lose, good guys win, nobody got shot, this is good news to read.

I wish we could afford a drug/and/or/explosive sniffing police K-9 for every officer out there. I am NOT a law enforcement expert or anything, but from what I see, K-9's are a good place to spend police budget dollars. They seem to offer a pretty good return on number of bad guys caught versus ammount of police budget spent.

The K-9 dogs are fabulous...I , for one, am glad the Sheriffs dept has them on hand to help sniff out the bad guys who continually try to cause problems to society. Thanks Sheriffs Dept and your awesome K-9 officers! God bless.
