KINGMAN - Mohave County this week announced its first successful countywide digital conversion of a Public Broadcasting System channel from Phoenix.

According to county Public Information Director Darryle Purcell, PBS station KAET Channel 8 has been fully converted from analog to digital signals and is now available on all digital-ready televisions, as well as older sets equipped with a digital converter box.

"Those who have not purchased a DTV converter box need to do so," said Mohave County Television District Manager Yvonne Orr.

"We recommend a 'pass-thru' model which will work with both analog and digital signals. Those who have a digital-ready television will be able to receive DTV without utilizing a converter box."

Orr noted that each time an individual station is converted to digital, viewers must rescan their converter boxes to set up their TV reception for the new signal.

While the new PBS station is the first converted signal to broadcast across the county, it is not the first to undergo the DTV transition.

In October 2009, the county converted channel K31BI, which re-broadcasts CBS affiliate KLAS out of Las Vegas, but the signal was only made available in Kingman, Golden Valley and Wikieup. Orr described that first conversion as "a test transmission," in contrast to this week's full conversion.

The DTV changeover does not affect county residents who receive their signals via satellite or cable.

The new digital transmission is 100x's better then the old analog was. Nice thing about this conversion is that We are are able to receive all 4 digital PBS transmissions with out having to pay cable or satellite companies for the main broadcast channel. Everyone wants help during the economic crisis, this is a great way to cut unnecessary cost to cable/satellite companies. Yes its a great investment of our county tax dollars to assist what many of us have gotten tired of paying for free Local channel broadcasts. Another good note is that the picture quality is 200 times better then cable or satellite signal compressed pictures. Thank you Mohave County.... But please hurry on the major networks, getting tired of Las Vegas schedule.
