KINGMAN - The Mohave Community College board of directors is set to expand the college's relationship with Capella University today, with the board prepared to vote to replace a letter of agreement with the university with a full-fledged articulation agreement.
If approved, the articulation agreement - the 17th such agreement for MCC - would formalize the transfer process between MCC and Capella and would give students greater ability to plan for specific degrees, allowing associate degree graduates in seven MCC programs to transfer into Capella as juniors.
A private online university based in Minneapolis, Capella was among the first to agree to accept MCC coursework for transfer students, signing the original letter of agreement in 2003. The university also offers a 10-percent tuition discount to MCC transfer students and alumni.
The board is also set to approve a change to how the college levies its technology fees. Currently, all enrolled students are required to pay $50 per semester for various technology upkeep costs, regardless of their class load. Today, the board will discuss whether to change the fee structure to a per-credit-hour basis so as to be more equitable to students taking only one or two classes at a time.
The new proposed fees would be $6 per credit hour, which staff maintains will generate roughly the same amount of revenue as the existing $50-per-head fee, but will place the bulk of that burden on the students most likely to make the greatest use of the college's technology.
Immediately following the meeting, board members will host a tour of the college's new Allied Health Training Center currently under construction on Detroit Avenue behind the Safeway grocery store.
Once finished, the center will house MCC's existing Registered Nursing program as well as a new one-year Licensed Practical Nursing program. The facility is currently scheduled for completion in mid-May.
Today's board meeting will take place at 10 a.m. in room 502 at the Neal Campus in Kingman, 1971 Jagerson Ave., and will be simulcast via interactive television at the Bullhead City, Lake Havasu City and North Mohave campuses.
