Soroptimist International of Kingman gave several awards out to women and those who help women during their meeting Thursday at the Kingman Elks Lodge. Erin Cochran, a City Council candidate, received the Women's Opportunity Scholarship Award, designed to assist mature heads of households with entry or re-entry to the labor market or the upgrading of skills. Catalina Viamonte won the Volunteer Violet Richardson Award, which recognizes young women (ages 14-17) who make the community a better place through volunteer efforts. CASA received a $5,000 donation for the work they do to help women and families. Q: *Why do we need SB1070 if Arizona law enforcement regularly turns over illegal aliens to Border Patrol agents already. With SB1070 the Arizona taxpayers will pay all the costs that go along with an arrest under state law. If law enforcement can already detain illegal aliens and simply turn them over to the feds, why should we pay all these extra costs in these times?

A: A very good question that I have no answer for. The law won't ever see the light of day. Most of the meat of it was...

Q: * Eighteen states and the District of Columbia were named finalists Tuesday in the second round of the federal "Race to the Top" school reform grant competition, giving them a chance to receive a share of $3.4 billion. The states are: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and South Carolina. All finalists will travel to Washington in coming weeks to present their proposals. Will you be covering any of this in your paper?
