KINGMAN - The editor of a gun magazine was arrested Wednesday in the shooting death of his friend.

Richard Erick Venola, 53, is charged with second-degree murder after authorities said he shot and killed his friend, James Patrick O'Neill, 39, just before 4 p.m. The men were both said to be from Golden Valley.

Venola is listed as a field editor for "Guns & Ammo" magazine and is said to be passionate about firearms. Sheriff's Spokeswoman Trish Carter said detectives are still trying to piece together what happened, but said that O'Neill was visiting Venola's home in the 4800 block of Mayan Drive when he was killed.

Carter added that O'Neill was shot once in his chest by a large caliber rifle. His body was found outside the home. The shooting was called into authorities by a neighbor.

My condolences to the family after their loss.

@mr parker
You sure hit the nail on the head comparing Kingman, or even any city in Arizona, to NYC, Chicago, or DC. They're practically the same places. Did you get help up on the subway between Home Depot and the hospital the other day like I did?

You carry or use a gun you are responsible for your actions. Use it wrong and you go to jail. Use it right and you live to see another day. People are responsible for all their actions. Many today want the government to be responsible and make their decisions for them. Why so many regulations and so many job losses.

"Registered guns to permit carrying hunters only. Any other possession of a firearm is a jailable offense. Period."

The Second Ammendment is not about hunting, bub. Are you going to volunteer to go door to door to help confiscate the millions of guns in private hands? LoL. If the govt. ever tried doing it they would the number of cops willing to do it dwindle after the first dozen or two were killed trying that. And before you say the military can do it, don't count on the rank and file people being willing to follow that order.

Here's a suggestion. Start working to get rid of the Second Amendment. That will keep you busy for the rest of your life, even though you will never see it happen. And don't forget to send a check to the Brady bunch. Or just flush the money down your toilet, it amounts to the same same thing, and you will save the cost of the stamp. LoL

The reason guns are allowed by the constitution is not to hunt animals, it is so the citizens have and maintain some degree of protection in their person and as a militia vs abuse of power by those claiming authority in high places. Hunting is not mentioned in the constitution. If I wanted to hunt it would not be with a gun, my personal feelings here, as think with our intellect we have a great advantage over wildlife, most of us. At most would endorse bow as a suited hunting device, but bare hands shows real challenge for the human. Wonder how many would take on a bear or large mountain lion with a knife? A gun is only needed against an equal a human.

"Another reason we should all have guns and no gun control, right?"

"no gun control"? I will love seeing you come up with proof of anyone advocating that position. I would also love to hear what gun control measures you think should be enacted. That would be good for a laugh, right? Specifically, what gun control law would have prevented this?

Sure! Let's just have local, state and US government have all the guns, shall we?

I'm reminded of a few years, ago, when the US government and many of us private citizens, were sending money and supplies to Myanmar. On CNN they reported that most of that aid was going directly to the government leaders and guerrilla camps. When a citizen was asked why they didn't press the government to feed them and use supplies, he replied, "They have all the guns." Do YOU trust any government this much? I don't.

These knee jerk reactions are not productive. IF the guy is charged, then, THAT is enough law. Go to US.gov and look up just which states are the most restrictive and the gun crime they have.

I think we need more facts to come out and to understand what really happened. You don't want to convict this man in the media do you, like George Zimmerman was

@Bob Kane,
Please feel free to move to Chicago,DC or NYC, some place where you don't have to be afraid of citizens with firearms, if you're scared to live in AZ.
Registered guns for hunting only, that sounds just like the National Socialist party.
After all, tyranny can't exist unless the people are disarmed and dumbed down.

@ Blast away - I think you're right about the overcrowding. Add to that the crap on television that glorifies everything society doesn't need, and the kids all linked 24/7 to their cell phones and ipods so they can get instant updates on "news"... not news like someone planted a garden, but all the details on what the latest idiot did.

In most people's minds (as evidenced by the bickering in comments to articles such as this), getting a "moment of fame" or having the final word is apparently more important than what you have to do to get it.

As to the gun-control issue, can we get a show of hands for how many people think cars should be outlawed because some people use them to deliberately harm or kill others?

Yeah dude, ban all guns man, cuz they're like, totally the only way to murder.

Get real idiots, a knife or blunt object would have had the same effect. Gonna ban all knives and heavy objects too?

James spent the week before his untimely death working 12 hour days helping our non profit organization to raise money for homeless animals. He and Vanessa gave donations and time generously and selflessly. That this should happen 3 days later is beyond sad, it is tragic. My prayers go to his family.

Gun Control does not seem to stop the criminals or the crazys, just puts a higher price on law abiding people. Maybe we need to focus more on Mental Health and Enforcing existing laws.(?)
However I completly agree with your second sentence. I would ad to it that- All murder Suicides should start with the suicide first!

The point you are proving is that it's political with people like you FIRST over a death.

Real funny/hahaha. Huh?

Sorry, it can't be overcrowding! Arizona is one of the least populated of states.... there's lots of room.

Guns kill people simply because the very people who have guns are the ones who shouldn't! I was raised in Montana where everyone had guns, but only to kill varmints. The problem with Arizonians is that they watch too many movies and believe that they are remnants of Hollywood's romantic "Wild West" which never did happen the way they think it did.

I feel for any family that the deceased may have. I'm sure they are in pain.

I think comments should wait until everything has been investigated.

Single shot from a large caliber rifle is assumption on the part of the investigators based on evidence at the scene.

I really hope it doesn't turn out the way so many will assume from whats written in this very short article.

Have read some of his (Richard) stuff, thought one of the posters here sounded like him, but can't be sure. When reviewing some data recently on wikipedia noted a statistic, which may or may not be true, that said that most murderers own guns. Kinda makes sense but so much nonsense on the net these days.
I do take note that another militia leader and gun activist yesterday in another part of Arizona killed 5 including a baby. Gabrielle Giffords was another shooting that took others in crowd to the pearly gates. Before 2000 it seemed like there were never so many killings as now in Arizona. Almost everyone had guns back then, what has changed? Or is it just my memories have become gilded with time?
How odd, there is a gun ad right on this page, have noticed a smoke shop ad on stories about drug arrests, maybe that's just random accident. I believe in liberty and so don't blame the guns, perhaps it's like that old lab experiment that had mice killing each other when their environment became overcrowded.
