's Eighth Annual "Give Kids a Smile Day" is less than three weeks a way, so if you're a parent of a child who does not have dental insurance, the time to get on the phone and schedule an appointment is now.
The event takes place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 2 at the college's Bullhead City campus, 3400 Highway 95. There, children between the ages of 4 and 14 who are not covered by insurance can receive teeth cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants and oral hygiene instructions.
The dentists participating in the event are Dr. J.R. DiCarlo, Dr. Charlie Lucero and Dr. Tom Hawkes. They will screen the youths for cavities, and MCC dental program students will provide the cleaning and sealants while being supervised by an instructor, explained Tracy Gift, MCC's dental programs director.
"Our MCC dental students love this event," Gift said. "It gives them an opportunity to give back to the community while providing exemplary dental services."
Space is limited. The event can accommodate 80 children and/or teenagers, so it's important for parents to call (928) 704-7797 to schedule an appointment.
Give Kids a Smile was created by the American Dental Association in 2002 and designed to provide dental services to underserved segments of the population.
Last February marked the movement's 10th anniversary, and according to a dental association report, Give Kids a Smile had provided 4.5 million children with free educational, preventative and restorative dental work as of last year.
Gift said that MCC's version of the program provided $39,000 worth of dental services for free at 2012's Give Kids a Smile Day.
