KINGMAN - A convicted armed robber who's not allowed to carry a firearm was found in possession of a 9 mm handgun with a 50-round magazine following a high-risk traffic stop Tuesday.
Mohave County Sheriff's deputies arrested Zachary Steven Russell, 23, of Kingman at about 9:30 a.m. after they spotted a silver Chevrolet sedan traveling at a high rate of speed in a residential area on Able Drive near Sunhaven Lane.
Russell continued driving even after deputies activated their emergency lights and then their siren, according to
Mohave County Sheriff's Office
spokeswoman Trish Carter.
When Russell did stop in the 3700 block of Diagonal Way, deputies pulled their weapons and ordered both the driver and his female passenger to raise their hands. Carter said the woman did so immediately, but Russell kept his hands on the steering wheel for a few moments before he complied.
Russell was convicted of armed robbery in 2008 in Mohave County Superior Court. He reportedly served about three and a half years in prison on that charge.
According to Carter, this is not the first time he has been charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
He reportedly told deputies he had just smoked marijuana and became nervous when he saw the patrol sedan.
Russell faces a felony charge of possession of a weapon by a prohibited person and a misdemeanor charge of driving on a suspended license.
The female passenger was released at the scene.
