KINGMAN - Cornerstone Mission Project will be "Putting on the Ritz" during its upcoming fundraiser to help the homeless this month.
The Third Annual Divas' Night Out, which has a 1920s theme this year, will feature dancing, drinks, appetizers, raffles, games and vendor booths.
Ladies are asked to wear "Flapper" attire - the short skirts and short hair worn by stylish, brash young women of the 1920s - or Zoot suits, gangster clothing or cigarette girl outfits.
All proceeds from the evening will go to the homeless shelter.
The women's fundraising night will take place from 7-11 p.m. July 27 at the Mohave County Fairgrounds, 2600 Fairgrounds Blvd. in Kingman. A total of 30 individual tickets for $40 each remain available for the event. Tickets can be purchased by calling (928) 715-3344 or (928) 530-6589.
Cornerstone Mission already has sold five "Bees Knees" sponsorship tables at $1,200 each, five $500 tables and 10 $400 tables.
"We love this community and it has been good to us," said Lisa Beauchamp, executive director of Cornerstone Mission project. "I think that as you gain length of service in an area, people see what you're doing and how you're helping others.
"Homelessness is a difficult thing, and either you have a heart for it or you don't. It's not something people really think about until it happens to them or someone they know."
Cornerstone Mission Project is a nonprofit, faith-based homeless family resource center serving Mohave County. About 30 homeless men can be housed at Cornerstone Mission and about 10 homeless women and children can stay at Diana's Faith House, which opened in February 2012.
The project's goal is to provide the basic necessities of life, including emergency shelter, food, clothing, showers and laundry facilities.
In 2012, donors and volunteers helped Cornerstone Mission Project serve 18,849 meals and provide 6,031 bed nights at the men's shelter, 683 food boxes, 1,966 showers, 1,071 clothing giveaways, 119 sets of bedding, 451 pairs of shoes and 1,265 hygiene packets.
The number of women and children staying at Diana's Faith House was not available.
From January through May 2013, the project has served 6,902 meals and provided 2,237 bed nights at the men's shelter, 607 food boxes, 796 showers, 401 clothing giveaways, 66 sets of bedding, 305 pairs of shoes and 808 hygiene packets.
Beauchamp said the project is in desperate need of men's shoes.
Cornerstone Mission Project also partners with Mohave County One-Stop Career Center in providing assistance in writing resumes and finding jobs.
It also offers life-skills classes, including budgeting, balancing a checkbook, completing job applications and successful interview techniques. The classes are open to the public.
Beauchamp said Divas' Night Out has grown each year, with 100 tickets available the first year, 150 the second year and 200 tickets this year. Last year's event, themed "All Dolled Up" with women dressing as their favorite dolls, brought in $12,000. This year's fundraiser will include a Charleston dance contest, music by local DJ Gene Stafford, glitter tattoos by Slightly High Maintenance and food by Dora's Beale Street Deli. Raffle prizes include a variety of women-oriented baskets.
"I think the reason this fundraiser has been so successful can be found in the song 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun,'" said Beauchamp. "That's the truth. These ladies need a night to get out and just have some fun. And they're doing it for a good cause."
