Kingman medical group spells H-E-L-P for Africa

Founded by medical care providers at Kingman Regional Medical Center, members of Live Now Inc. pose for a photograph while on a mission to Tanzania. The group holds its annual fundraiser Saturday.

KINGMAN - Any way you spell it out, the Kingman Powerhouse Visitors Center will be the place to be at 6 p.m. Saturday for the Second Annual Live Now Adult Spelling Bee and Silent Auction fundraiser.

The not-for-profit medical mission group founded by doctors and nurses at Kingman Regional Medical Center is raising funds for another good-works trip to Tanzania, Africa in October and Ethiopia in January.

Medical care and education are the focus of Live Now Inc., now in its third year.

"We travel to Third World countries and provide medical treatment and work in schools," said Gretchen Dorner, a member of Live Now and the principal of Lee Williams High School.

"Our goal is to sustain an area for a few years, educate the locals and then go to a new area. I love it."

Last year, doctors from KRMC in a single week performed 25 surgeries on villagers in Tanzania.

"It was amazing," said Dorner, a member of the board along with founders Dr. Jeffrey Lunn and RN Leslie Martin, and Lenore Stephey, an anesthesia technician. Dr. Joe Tedesco and his wife, Billie, an RN, will return with the group for a third time this year, said Dorner.

The rules of the spelling bee are similar to those followed by the National Spelling Bee, but with a twist.

Companies, agencies and individuals can sponsor spellers for the first four rounds - and round sponsors choose the word.

"It actually gets hysterical in the first four rounds," said Dorner. "The fifth round is when things get serious."

KRMC employee Claire Crum is the reigning "Queen Bee," having won last year's contest.

Tickets are $35 per person or $60 per couple and attendees must be 21 or older.
