Murder indictment served in Fort Mohave death

Louis Hugh Plunkett Jr.

FORT MOHAVE - A Mohave County Grand Jury indicted Louis Hugh Plunkett Jr. on charges of first-degree murder in the June 26 bludgeoning death of Marilyn Susan Burdick.

Plunkett, 54, was extradited from California and is currently in the Mohave County jail in Kingman on a $250,000 bond.

Burdick, 62, was found dead in the backyard pool at her Fort Mohave home on South Antelope Drive. First responders initially thought she was a drowning victim, but wounds to her head prompted them to call law enforcement.

Plunkett, of Fort Mohave, told deputies that Burdick, his girlfriend and an instructor at the Bullhead City campus of Mohave Community College, fell and hit her head on a chair and then fell into the pool.

The story didn't mesh with Burdick's injuries and other evidence. Mohave County Sheriff's detectives attempted to pull over Plunkett on Interstate 40 on July 2, but the man drove into California.

He didn't get far. San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies arrested Plunkett after he drove about a half mile into California.

Plunkett was held in the Needles, Calif., jail for nearly two weeks before he was extradited to Arizona. He is due to be arraigned in Superior Court sometime this week.

A former girlfriend of Plunkett's told the Miner he has a temper, although she said it was never directed at her.

Still, she said she broke off the relationship after Plunkett's personality changed several years ago.

She said he became paranoid and incessantly complained people were after him.
