575 pounds of marijuana: Not just a traffic ticket

Karl H. Veal

KINGMAN - A Tucson man allegedly hauling nearly 600 pounds of marijuana picked a bad time to commit a moving violation Saturday afternoon on Interstate 40.

Karl H. Veal, 53, reportedly admitted he had a "large amount" of marijuana in his vehicle after an Arizona Department of Public Safety officer pulled him over at milepost 45 at about 12:30 p.m.

Members of the Mohave Area General Narcotics Enforcement Team assisted the DPS officer.

"A search of the vehicle resulted in approximately 575 pounds of marijuana, valued at approximately $287,000, being seized," said Kingman Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Sochocki.

Veal did not get far in his journey. Sochocki said he was transporting the marijuana from Los Angeles to Detroit.

He was taken into custody without incident and his vehicle was impounded for possible forfeiture.
