KINGMAN - Sheriff Jim McCabe, in one of his first official acts after taking over for Tom Sheahan nearly three weeks ago, appointed Capt. Greg Smith to serve as his chief deputy - the second highest position in the
Mohave County Sheriff's Office
Smith is an MCSO veteran with nearly 30 years of service. He was hired in April of 1985 after graduating with distinction from the Arizona Law Enforcement Training Academy in Tucson.
According to the sheriff's office, Smith worked as a patrol deputy throughout the county before he was assigned as a jail investigator when the current facility was built on Beale Street.
Smith also worked as a detective who investigated homicides, sex crimes and robberies, along with less serious crimes.
He was promoted to sergeant in 1989 and to captain just one year later. After completing the six-week Arizona Law Enforcement Leadership Institute during the end of 1991 and the beginning of 1992, Smith took his experience and knowledge to
Mohave Community College
, where he taught criminal justice, constitutional law and other classes, both at the college and at police academies in western Arizona.
That McCabe appointed Smith to fill the same position that McCabe held under Sheahan should not surprise anyone. Smith has been third in command at the sheriff's office for years, and on numerous occasions was named as acting chief deputy in McCabe's absence.
Smith graduated from the FBI National Academy for command staff in 1998. His current duties include oversight of the patrol division, Search and Rescue and Animal Control.
