Brewer accepting applications for new superior court judge

Erin Taylor
Miner Staff Reporter

Applications are being accepted for a new judicial position on the Mohave County Superior Court, Gov. Jan Brewer's office announced last week.

The Board of Supervisors in June voted 2-1 to petition the governor to approve a seventh superior court division and an additional judge to serve that division. Supervisor Buster Johnson opposed the motion.

Brewer granted the request in September. Her office will be formally accepting applications for a new judge through Dec. 13.

Once a list of candidates has been compiled and released, the public will be able to offer comments through Dec. 28.

A National Center for State Courts study of the judicial workload in Mohave County was presented to the Board of Supervisors over the summer and concluded that the county needs 10 judicial officers in order to handle the increase in caseloads over the last decade. It currently has eight, including six superior court judges and two pro-tem commissioners.

The Arizona Constitution provides one superior court judge for every 30,000 residents. Mohave County has a population of more than 200,186 according to the last Census.

Yavapai has a population of 211,000 and has 10 judicial positions. Yuma County has a population of 195,000 and has nine positions.
