It'll be another week before the Kingman Unified school board decides which candidates it's going to interview for the board's vacancy, a position that has two years of a four-year term remaining.

The three KUSD board members who showed up to Monday's special meeting decided to take a week to individually look through the 10 letters of interest submitted last week for the vacant board seat, select three candidates and come back Nov. 27 to pick the candidates who will be interviewed and formulate the process.

"It makes sense to narrow the list down a little instead of interviewing each one," said Charles Lucero, the board's vice president.

Roger Jacks, the district's superintendent, recommended the board follow a formal interviewing process that resembles what the district uses when it interviews potential employees.

That would include asking the same set of questions to each applicant interviewed and developing a scoring rubric based on those questions.

"It can help the decision-making process," he said.

Board member Jeri Brock agreed that conducting interviews is the appropriate way of proceeding, but she wasn't sold on creating a rubric.

Her colleague, board member Laurie Voss Barthlow, said she feels very strongly about conducting interviews and sticking to the process the board comes up with next week.

"I don't know everybody here," Voss Barthlow said of the 10 applicants, adding that a formal process will help the board make the best decision.

But what exactly that process will be is a discussion the board will save for Monday.

The board also wants to wait for the Mohave County Board of Supervisors to certify the general election results on Monday before it makes any concrete decisions.

The final tally had the two seats that were at stake going to Voss Barthlow and Bruce Ricca, but third-place vote-getter Kevin Burgess lost by less than 30 votes.

Both Ricca and Burgess submitted letters of interest for the vacant seat.

The special meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. Nov. 27 at the district offices, 3033 MacDonald Ave.

I believe as a resident and registered voter of Mohave County it is the only Logical decision to Put Mr. Burgess on the school board. He has a proven track record in buisness and family. Is that not what we are all looking for. he also had the desire to run and only loosing by less than 30 votes shoulfd tell us something. If these other people wanted to help why didnt they run? Or did they want the easy way? Is that what we want on our doeard? I definatly do not.

I guess since there are two Burgess family members on the Board in Bullhead, we need another here too.

Carlin should never be taken off the board no matter where he lives, put him back in the seat he has enough experience he can phone it in. Carlin is the most important man in our community and we need an important leader like Carlin.

I agree with Penny...barring any specific legal reason not to hire Burgess, he seems to be the public's choice!

@ Penny White

Your comments make a great deal of sense. Seems like the public has spoken and the Board is thumbing their collective noses at us. Something else must be going on.

While I firmly agree there should be a thorough formal review of the applicants. I strongly feel Mr. Burgess deserves without hesitation a position on the board. Here we have what seems to me a solid and proven business man with a strong desire to help our school district. He has certainly made just efforts to educate and invest himself into the position he was seeking.

It appears to me all these other citizens have good intentions to help here, but where were they when it was open for all of them to run. Did they choose not to run based on personal conflict, monetary issues or just plain “I’m too lazy to put in the effort”?

Let put someone in that wanted the job in the first place. Let us not make the mistake of keeping someone (we elected) in a spot they certainly don’t take serious enough to attend monthly meetings because they are too busy with personal business or these Johnny come latelys.

Let's use our heads KUSD !

We wish to thank Mr. Carlin for his service, and wish him well in his future efforts in Tucson, Phoenix or California, or wherever his business takes him.

I believe it will be a complete travesty and the KUSD board going against the more than 6,300 voters’ wishes who voted for Kevin Burgess if they do not decide to include his name as one of those they send on to Mohave County Superintendent Mike File as their recommendation to fill the vacated position of Bill Goodale. I personally know Kevin Burgess and I honestly believed he is a man of honor, would do an outstanding job and is the right person to be a member of the KUSD Board. I also agree with Penny White – appoint Kevin Burgess to fill the vacant position. KUSD Board members, remember the voters put you into the position of authority and you should do as the voters wanted – recommend Burgess to Mike File.

Carlin didnt bother to run for his seat and then blew off most meeting the past year. he does not deserve to be on the board. .... Burgess would be the logical choice.

There should be at least three additional seats on the Board reserved only for representative parents of KUSD students, one each for elementary, middle and high school. As parents have little say in matters pertaining to their children within the KUSD system. The parent representives would also come to the table with a more unique view of what needs to be done to improve our schools and they would be more approachable by other parents. This would increase parental involvement in our schools. It would be a win-win situation for both the board and the parents/students.

Why not appoint Mr. Burgess. He lost by less than 30 votes and he wanted to run, was willing to take the risk of running against others. Since the election just concluded and he had that many votes it only makes sense in this case to just put him in. The others didn't take the time or effort to run and put themself out there for others to make a decision.
Let the vote count.

My two cents
