GOLDEN VALLEY - A California woman arrested Sunday on suspicion of car theft inexplicably told Mohave County jail personnel she was nine months pregnant and that her baby had dropped and she was losing water.

Doctors at Kingman Regional Medical Center determined that Theresa Marie Austin, 47, of Rancho Cucamonga was not ready to deliver a baby - in fact, she had no baby to deliver.

Deputies were called to a Golden Valley business regarding a stolen vehicle in the parking lot at about 1:30 p.m. A check revealed the 2004 Ford Taurus was reported stolen out of California and that Austin was the suspect.

Deputies contacted Austin inside the store.

She reportedly advised deputies that she took the car from her stepfather after he sold her vehicle.

She was taken into custody without incident on charges of possession of stolen property, a felony, but picked up a misdemeanor charge of false report to law enforcement after her claim of pregnancy.
