A man who bolted from a home when Mohave County Sheriff's deputies smelled marijuana while doing a follow-up investigation has been charged with assaulting a deputy who tried to take him into custody.

Michael Anthony Burke, 18, was reportedly inside a home in the 1800 block of Devlin Avenue when deputies showed up unannounced around 5 p.m. Thursday to conduct follow-up work in a theft investigation.

Sheriff's Spokeswoman Trish Carter said deputies were questioning the people inside the home when they smelled marijuana. That's when Burke reportedly fled from the home and ran uninvited into a neighbor's home.

That neighbor alerted deputies, who went inside to arrest Burke. Deputies were trying to take Burke into custody when he began struggling, broke free and ran toward the rear of the house, Carter said.

Burke was able to get out of the home through a back door, but deputies were able to catch up and take him into custody.

A deputy involved in the struggle with Burke suffered abrasions and bruises, Carter said. Burke was booked into the Mohave County Jail on felony charges of resisting arrest and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

The owner of the home Burke broke into declined to press trespassing charges because Burke was arrested on the other charges, Carter added.
