KINGMAN - A BMX track is finally starting to take shape from the nondescript mounds of dirt in the northwest corner of the Mohave County Fairgrounds.

Jim Kloepfer of Bicycle World on Northern Avenue expects the basic layout of the track to be finished by the end of the week.

BMX enthusiasts still will have to wait at least another month before they can get their wheels dirty, he said.

"We've got quite a few expensive pieces left, a lot of little details," he said. "It's happening quickly."

Some of those pieces include running electricity and water to the location, purchasing and installing a scoring system, installing a starting gate, putting up fencing and purchasing an ATV to help with track maintenance.

"We've gotten a lot of help already," he said, including from BMX itself. The organization donated the time of one of its best track designers to help lay out the new facility.

"They're really excited about coming to Kingman," Kloepfer said. "This guy's laid out 90 percent of the tracks in North America, including some Olympic courses."

Kingman's layout is slightly smaller but will have some of the same characteristics of those Olympic courses as well as some new features, he said.

"There are some jumps he wanted to try and the starting hill is higher," Kloepfer said.

The whole course is also slightly sunken into the ground so that audiences will get a better view.

The plan is to have the track open twice a week for practice and once a week for races. An entrance fee would be charged to help with upkeep. Kloepfer also wants to attract national races.

The organization could still use some help raking and smoothing the track. Contact Kloepfer at (928) 757-5730.

@Who's Liable?
The event coordinators most likely have a liability insurance policy. This is a requirement for any event held on county or city property AFAIK.

As I remember, the street drags people carried $10M.

I am impressed that this type of recreation was approved by Kingman. This town isnt very progressive. I for one would like to congratulate Jim Kloepfer of Bicycle World for his achievements thus far. Obviously this type of undertaking involved numerous players that i would like to tip my hat to as well. Hopefully Kingman embrace this opportunity.

As a resident of a county that always seems to be out of money, I'd like to know who's liable if there is an accident. I'm sure the victim (or victim's family) will name the county in any lawsuit.

Growing up BMX racing, I have to say that it is truly a family sport. You will not find a better group of people than at a BMX Race. As State and National Champion for many years, I am so glad to see that the kids and adults in Kingman and the surrounding areas get such a fantastic sport in the area!
