KINGMAN - Lightning has struck twice for Kingman High Senior David Joe.

This is the second year Joe was picked, out of hundreds of Arizona students who audition, to play saxophone for the Arizona All-State Band.

In order to get into the band, students have to audition for and be accepted by their regional orchestra.

Joe was one of 40 students who auditioned for the Northwest Arizona Regional Orchestra this year. Eighteen of those students, including Joe, were picked to play in the Orchestra.

According to his Student Rotarian biography, this is the fourth year Joe has been picked to play in the orchestra.

Joe then had to audition again for one of the few alto saxophone seats in the All-State Band, which can be kind of nerve-wracking.

"Of course there's a lot of stress when you're auditioning. Everyone is really, really good," he said. "The last time I made it I didn't feel like I really belonged there. There's so many good people. It's a new, different level."

The audition music the students must play is challenging and requires a lot of practice, Joe said. "But it's very cool (music)."

Joe will head to Flagstaff April 18 to practice with his fellow All-State Band members for two days before performing in the All-State Festival of Performance on April 20 with the band and the All-State Concert Choir.

While music is certainly Joe's passion, it is not the only thing he excels at. The Kingman Rotary Club named him a student Rotarian this year.

He is also head drum major for the marching band, plays in the school jazz band, is co-captain of the soccer team, is the vice president of the National Honor Society, is a National Merit semi-finalist and volunteers at Kingman Regional Medical Center and his church.

Joe hasn't decided which college he wants to attend next year. He's not sure that he wants to pursue playing music as a career. He is considering studying music production and engineering.

Congratulations to not only David Joe, but to the whole Joe family. I originally met the family while working in Youth Services at the Library in Kingman. He has grown up to be a great young man and I hope other teens look up to him and his sisters, whom are all incredible.
