KINGMAN - A man riding an ATV came across the body of So-Hi resident Larry Brotsch, who went missing April 24.

Richard Schmaling said he was riding north on the ATV trail east of Highway 93 about a mile and a half from So-Hi when he came across Brotsch's body.

"It scared the hell out of me," said Schmaling. "I didn't know if somebody was in the area shooting at people."

Brotsch's body was down in a gully and his pickup truck was on a rise nearby.

Schmaling said he immediately called the Mohave County Sheriff's Office and subsequently learned from one of the deputies that Brotsch's family had reported him missing.

The Kingman Daily Miner published a story regarding Brotsch on May 8, the day before Schmaling discovered his body.

He was last seen at about 8 p.m. on April 24 leaving the Castle Rock Trading Post in Golden Valley, according to his family. Brotsch, 79, was a diabetic who suffered with dementia.

Mohave County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Trish Carter said foul play is not suspected in his death.

Schmaling, a retired sailor, said the incident shook him up.

"I felt so bad," he said. "I was in tears all the rest of that day."
