KINGMAN - The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is moving some of the wild horse/burro pens at its temporary staging facility near Shinarump Road in Golden Valley to Florence to help develop a new training program with the Arizona Department of Corrections.

"The Bureau of Land Management established an assistance agreement with the Arizona Department of Corrections to develop a 750-head training and holding facility at the prison in Florence," said Chad Benson, the wild horse and burro specialist for the Kingman BLM Office, in an email.

"The corrals in Kingman were never used as a holding facility. They were considered staging corrals and only used for short-term holding of less than a few days," he said. "At most, there were approximately 20 horses or burros that were held over until they could be moved to a permanent holding facility like in Ridgecrest, Calif.

"BLM Arizona transferred all materials and equipment not used for the temporary staging corral in Kingman to ADOC to support the facility."

The Department of Corrections is also paying to move the pens, he said.

"The prison will work with the animals to gentle, saddle train, and halter train the horses," Benson said. "The burros will be trained to pack and pull wagons. This partnership with ADOC saves government funds, increases the adoptability of the wild horses and burros and both parties will benefit from the program."
