KINGMAN - A City Council that Mayor Janet Watson described as "overwhelmed" with the quality of the 16 candidates unanimously chose Jennee "Jen" Miles to fill a vacancy that was created upon former Mayor John Salem's midterm resignation.

Miles, 61, was one of four of the 16 applicants who made the short list after the Council met in closed session.

Miles, Mike Roberts, Chuck Waalkens and Dr. Jeri Brock each briefly spoke to the City Council before members went into a second closed session. They then voted for Miles when back in open session.

Miles, 61, serves on a number of local and state boards and has a strong background in a number of areas, particularly economic development, higher education and public service.

"I very much believe all of us share a common vision," she said to the Council.

Miles said she would work to improve the Kingman economy and elevate the quality of life for its citizens.

She also said the work she's done over her two decades in the city has put her in touch with important state and local contacts.

Miles said she has the time to devote 15 to 20 hours a week to the city, the number of hours Watson advised all applicants the job requires.

Miles holds a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and a master's in business administration.

She is a small business advocate who serves on the Mohave/LaPaz Workforce Investment Board, the Arizona Association of Workforce Developers and the Arizona Friends of Small Business. She is a past member of the Governor's Task Force on Higher Education.

Miles was instrumental in the creation of the Kingman and Mohave Manufacturing Association.

Her strengths, she said, include collaborating with both the public and private sectors to identify issues and move forward.

Great choice! Now - a little advice - please have the common sense your fellow council doesn't have and at least do a google search on the City Manager candidates. The one that ditched us just ditched another city not one month prior. What is the saying.... The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior?

I, too was honored being considered for the open seat. Jen is very worthy of the confidence the council place in her.

Congratulations, Jen. You will do a great job for our town.

It was a privilege to be considered for the open council seat as I strongly agree with the mayor that the field of candidates were exceptionally strong. I would also say that I believe the council made the right decision. Congratulations to Kingman's newest member and best wishes for a successful tenure.
