Warnings too effective? Not all property tax notices are scams
Mohave County mailings are legitimate, sheriff's office says

KINGMAN - The Mohave County Sheriff's Office may be a victim of its own success in warning the public about scams and potential scams.

For example, some believe that the overdue personal property tax bill notices sent through the mail from the MCSO are part of a scam not all that different from one reported in Thursday's Miner.

In that case, a caller identified herself as an employee of the county trying to collect property taxes.

The call is a scam, MCSO spokeswoman Trish Carter said, and shouldn't be confused with the "legitimate efforts" by the MCSO regarding the overdue personal property tax bill notices.

Carter has two new scams the public should be aware of.

The first seems to be confined to the Mohave Valley area. A caller identifies himself as with the MCSO or the Mohave courts and tells the person who answered the phone they need to pay for an outstanding traffic ticket immediately or a warrant for their arrest will be issued.

Cater said that on at least three occasions, the caller identified himself as "Major Aaron Forrester."

One person fell victim to the scam and, as instructed, went to Walmart and purchased a Green Dot card for the amount of the "fine," in this case $437.36. The Green Dot card was unloaded as instructed onto a prepaid Visa card.

The MCSO is investigating.

The second scam involves a person going door-to-door regarding an update to the homeowners' Dish Network television service. The "technician" said he needs to get inside the home to upgrade the Dish equipment.

"The Mohave County Sheriff's Office does not recommend allowing strangers into your residence," Carter said.
