Beneficial burns for Hualapais this week

KINGMAN - The sight of smoke coming from the Hualapai Mountains, perhaps as early as today, means the Bureau of Land Management-Colorado River District was able to begin a prescribed burn that is expected to last for three to five days.

The burn will take place 28 miles southeast of Kingman on the south end of the Hualapai Mountains near Burch Peak. The BLM warns smoke could be heavy at times and will likely be visible from Kingman, Yucca, Wikieup, Interstate 40 and U.S. 93.

The plan is to treat roughly 1,250 acres of dense chaparral brush, "returning fire to an area where it can play a natural role in the health of the environment," according to Lori Cook of the BLM's Yuma office.

The burn also will reduce the risk of dangerous wildfires and will improve forage for wildlife and livestock, said Cook in a statement.
