3/23/2014 6:00:00 AM Kingman shooter's sentence: 5 years
KINGMAN - The Kingman man who shot his roommate in a 2012 dispute was sentenced to five years in prison Thursday.
The five-year term was the minimum that Matthew Alan Morris, 32, could have received. Judge Derek Carlisle could have sentenced Morris to a maximum of seven and a half years in prison.
Following last month's verdict, defense attorney Ron Gilleo said the jury didn't believe Morris shot his roommate in the shoulder in self-defense despite reports that the victim allegedly engaged in escalating aggression before Morris shot him.
The Sept. 23, 2012 argument was about money and the payment of bills.
A Mohave County jury convicted Morris of aggravated assault with use of a deadly weapon in a verdict delivered Feb. 20. Jurors were hung on a second charge of misconduct involving a weapon.
Judge Derek Carlisle gave Morris credit for the 104 days he was in the Mohave County jail prior to his sentencing hearing.
