Scam preys on Obamaphobics

Erin Taylor
Miner Staff Reporter

KINGMAN - A member of the public safety group Mohave Silent Witness said she was on the receiving end of a phone scam tailored to prey on people's political leanings.

The scammer reportedly called three weeks ago and asked for donations for a petition to force President Barack Obama to produce an original, certified copy of his birth certificate.

The man purported to be from an organization that wants Obama out of office.

The Silent Witness member listened to the caller's entire speech but smartly asked for the caller to send the request in the form of a letter or email, said Mohave County Sheriff's spokeswoman Trish Carter. Even though the caller took the woman's email address, she never received anything from the group.

Carter said that people are wise to be suspicious of such calls and are cautioned against giving out any personal information.

"No matter the reason, if an unknown caller wants personal information from you such as your address, a credit card number, bank draft or Western Union transfer, under no circumstances give this information out," she said. "Nine times out of 10, it will be a scam just to get money from you."

Law enforcement is often handcuffed by lack of information or jurisdiction in recovering money lost in scams such as this one, she added.

To report a crime to Silent Witness anonymously, call (928) 753-1234, 1-888-227-8780 or log onto http://mohavesilentwitness.tripod.com.

The allegation that Obama was not born in the United States remains persistent in some political circles despite records produced in Hawaii, where Obama was born, and the fact that the president released a copy of his long-form birth certificate last year. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is among those who have raised questions about the certificate released by the White House.

He has plenty of detractors in Mohave County, where he got less than 30 percent of the vote in November.

I've read a similar complaint posted at Callercenter although I didn't think it was this prevalent. Can't the authorities trace where the calls originate?

@Linda

"The birth certificate. He produced something that has been deemed a complete very poorly done fraud by no less than a dozen experts. Let's not forget, he is using a social security card that was issued to someone else in a state where obama never even lived."

That pack of lies has been debunked many times over on many different threads, so now you try to trot that dead horse out again? LoLoL

"How about the fraud in the recent election?"

Again, the only documented cases of fraud in the last election came from Republicans. You trying to pass this bit of misinformation off again?

The birthers are not the brightest bulbs on the Christmas tree to begin with, so its not surprising that many of them would fall for a silly scam like this! Its like the latest one Obama will issue a executive order taking all the guns, we have a multi-branch government due to our founding fathers in their wisdom knew anyone form of power could be corrupted and tempted to become tyranical, hence any order by the three branches are balanced by the US Supreme court who can even dictate to a president over reaching his power and authority and if he refused to obey a lawful order by the US Supreme court even a Nixon realized he had over reached and rather than face impeachment by his own party and the oppoents party he resigned Obama is nothing but smart, he is not going to shoot himself in the proverbial foot!

Yeah, Brewer's great, unless you consider this state's near-the-bottom rankings in education, quality of life, etc. Turn off Rush and turn on your TV. Too bad 70 percent of our voters are duped by conservative politicians.

Where have you been Erin? The real scam is the one perpetrated on the American people by barack obama. Money? Dear Lord, noone has taken more money from Americans then barack obama.

Illegal? How about the $400,000 worth of illegal donations in his first run, most coming from muslim countries? How about the fraud in the recent election? Scammed Americans? Dear God, he is the king of scammers.

The birth certificate. He produced something that has been deemed a complete very poorly done fraud by no less than a dozen experts. Let's not forget, he is using a social security card that was issued to someone else in a state where obama never even lived.

Why don't you do a story on real fraud. The fraud of barack hussein obama on the American people. Investigative journalism is a lost art but believe me, there is NO shortage of information on this arrogant sicko. It's just that left wing media types ignore it all and if you are on the right and report it, you are called a wacko.

So we sit and watch our country being systematically destroyed while we can't seem to do anything about it. Meanwhile, the low information people keeping praising this lying bum.

Scammers know one thing- that conservatives are not very bright. Thus, they are easily duped.

@ Tom Bergstrand
That's pretty funny. The WH BC says "African" not "African-American". Very common terminology. I had a neighbor back in VA and if I had asked his race, I'm quite sure he would have said African. Negro was a term applied to American blacks, not those from other countries.

As to the country, the WH BC says "Kenya, East Africa". Many maps of the period said Kenya, East Africa or Kenya, British East Africa.

You must have seen a copy from a birther website....since I see some of those are indeed similar to your stated version.

The reason that the long form BC still draws criticism are 2 glaring errors. 1) The fathers race is listed as African-American. Since he was never an American that hyphenated distinction has no credence. It is also a term not used in the early sixties. The legal term was Negro. 2) It states the father was from Kenya. That area was not called that until 2 years after obama was born. It was East Africa British Protectorate. This shows that the BC was fabricated years later using terminoligies coined years after the BC was allegedly generated. You believe what you want.

Which goes to show how out of touch people in this county are with the rest of the world. He is still President and that fact galls quite a few people here.

Glad to see 70% of the voters here aren't duped by the liberal politicians. BTW, we have a great Governor too.

"Obamaphobics?" What an inane term. I don't recall the word "Romneyphobics" being used to describe delusional people such as "Joe Schmo." PS: If Obama is so caring, why is his administration attempting to increase the number of people who will be enslaved by dependency on the government? Liberal MUST have the poor, poverty and the welfaristocracy to justify their existence, policies, and agendas for every election. The so-called "war on poverty" will never be won since liberals keep redefining "poverty" to include more and more people who "need" liberals to "take care of them." Liberals will NOT allow "poverty" to be solved. They need the votes!! What a travesty and hypocrisy. The poor and working classes are simply grist in the mill for liberals. Keep grinding them down, liberals! Your "caring" is an opiate more dangerous than meth, heroin, etc. in destroying lives.

There's no doubt these scammers, whoever they are, know their target audience. I can't think of a better place to separate people from their money using this particular scam. After all Mohave County is mostly poor, white, uneducated and voted overwhelming for the rich plutocrat who couldn't care less about them rather than vote for a president who actually cares about the poor and working classes. But you know Obama's a Kenyan, Marxist, socialist, communist, Muslim, blah blah blah...
