Suicide ends standoff for Lake Havasu City man

TOPOCK - A Lake Havasu City man shot and killed himself after a three-hour standoff with law enforcement on Interstate 40 at about 1 a.m. Saturday.

Officers with the Department of Public Safety attempted to pull over David Michael Jones, 47, at about 10 p.m. Friday when he crashed the red Mustang he was driving on Interstate 40 at milepost 2.

The accident did not result in an injury to Jones, according to Mohave County Sheriff's spokeswoman Trish Carter.

DPS officers requested the assistance of Mohave County Sheriff's deputies after Jones made deadly threats with a handgun, said Carter.

Negotiators with the MCSO made contact with Jones through the use of a public announcement system and attempted to have him disarm himself without success.

According to Carter, a gunshot was heard from Jones' vehicle at about 1 a.m. He was the lone occupant of the car, said Carter, and died at the scene.

Autopsy results are pending and the MCSO is investigating the death as a suicide.
