KINGMAN - Kingman Air & Auto Show Inc. officials say the popular event won't be held this year.

"We are very disappointed that there will not be a show this year," Kingman Air Show President Andrew Raynor said. "The decision was made because of various factors, including the slumping economy and a complete lack of military support."

According to Raynor, the biggest part of the decision to cancel was due to what occurred last year with the military and its announcement recently not to support air shows during 2013.

Last year, the military committed to provide various aircraft for the 2012 air show, which the air and auto show officials advertised. At the last minute, the government cancelled the military's participation.

The United States government is not just cancelling military participation this year at smaller air shows such as Kingman's. They have also cancelled major air shows completely at various military installations, including Luke AFB in Arizona; Langley AFB in Virginia; NAS Corpus Christi in Texas; MCAS Beaufort Air Show in South Carolina; Dover AFB in Delaware; Hickam AFB Open House in Hawaii; and even Aviation Nation at Nellis AFB in Nevada, just to name a few.

Even though there won't be a full-blown air and auto show, Raynor indicated they may attempt to have a fly-in later this year as has been held in Bullhead City in the past.

I have worked in the airport industrial park for the last two years. Two years ago they had an F-16 flying around and this was really cool and brought people to see the show. Last year had no military, and they were charging a $12.00 enterance fee. I work at the airport and didn't even think twice about paying $12.00 bucks to see aircraft that I have seen many times before at other airshows for free. Maybe five or six bucks for parking, but twelve to get me in the show to see what. Times are tought all over, and better no show than a show that doesn't deliver.

Now, as to the presidents Africa trip. As you righties pointed out – endlessly – during The Criminals Eight Year Reign of Error, “The President Is NEVER On vacation,” it should be pointed out this trip is primarily to cement relations between our nation and numerous sub-Saharan nations and yes, it will be expensive because of the high security involved to protect our president. We know you righties are not in favor of ever protecting President Obama, but the rest of us are. As to cost the White House has estimated the trip will run in the $50 million range. Not the hyperbolic “$100 MILLION” dollars as reported by right wing shouting heads.

“Gee, Bush won twice and you are still screeching about it years later.”

Actually The Criminal was appointed once and won once. And since he was the absolute worst president in the history of the nation I think we should all “screech” about him as a constant reminder to NEVER allow a convicted criminal into the White House, ever again.

Why not just scale the event back to a big one day event?

Have a car show, have an air show, have a lunchen bar b que, have an evening concert and dance.

Way better in my opinion to have a shorter more varied show than to have no show at all.

Thank you for your clarification regarding the corporation which I'm guessing is a non-profit 501C3. I will now eat my humble pie!

I'm am curious however regarding the military prescence...does the lack of it affect the Air/Auto Show attendence so greatly that it makes the show a potential money loser?

Also many years ago I was also was a volunteer working at the Air/Auto show donating my time for an event that I thought was worthwhile for the community without ever expecting any public thank you. However, since you suggested it, let me say Thank You to all of the folks who donated their time to the Air/Auto show.

Moderate might be on to something. As a worker at the airport industrial park I saw what a dismal turnout these shows produce. Yea, you have those who enthusiastically showed - the old soldiers wanting to bask in the war equipment, the young boys that dream of flying, or the ones longing for any type of entertainment. However, they are not large enough crowds. The stands were never full, often less than half. Didn't the Miner run an article or column on the organizers of this show having a very hard time financially? Also, why should this group be so dependent on the military showing up. Why can't it find support by Boeing or Great Lakes Airline (yes, folks our hometown airline no one ever knows exists), or by companies that offer flying lessons, or private airman that like to show off their talents. Heck the organizers could even have one day devoted to radio controlled aircraft - our military would certainly beat down our doors to show off their latest drones. Or at the very least those companies that build the drone.

Ok so enough already with the blame game. The blame cant and shouldn’t be placed on a party as we the people are to blame. We sit back and enjoy the fact we can point fingers here or there and yet come November we either vote for the same meat heads who put us in this problem or sit on our couch and do nothing because "it’s not my problem". It time to shut up and act and the only way to do it is to change the culture in Washington. It time to get off the couch or step away from the computer and TELL those we have elected it’s time to listen to the people and represent them. We put them in the position to be a voice for us, if they choose to do otherwise then it’s time to act.

The Kingman airshow is non-profit . All monies gathered are then taken and used to buy fuel and acts for the audience along with other necessities for the show . After the show is done and all bills payed , The Airshow then takes a % of left over monies and gives it to 1 or 2 charities here in Kingman . As far as Military showing up or not it is sad that our leaders are putting a stop to this along with other "real world " involvements . One more thing , I do agree with the fact that the show went down hill after the drags were dropped . I truly believe it was the drags that brought in the crowds , and I should know i worked the airshow for 6 years . And that is my 3-cents

Moderately Independent – First off, none of the people who are part of the air and auto show, such as Andy and I, in addition to all of the other volunteers, do not get paid one dime. The entire event is a non-profit event and we donate all of our time, and sometimes our own funds, to ensure the show is held. Many people who attended the 2012 air and auto show complained to Andy Raynor after last year’s show because the military was supposed to be there, but at the last minute, cancelled. We publicized the military attending and it isn’t our fault they decided at the last minute to cancel their participation. They were supposed to provide a couple of F16s for a flyover as they did in 2011 and the C17 transport plan for a static display. One reason for cancelling was last year, the show hardly made enough money to pay all for the expenses. Remember when a civilian pilot brings his aircraft to the show, the air and auto show had to pay for his fuel, room and board and meals. That in it, gets to be a major cost. As for the drag racing not being conducted for 2012, you can blame the FAA for them saying it they could not be held. Instead of criticizing Andy Raynor and the others who donate their time to put on the show, maybe you should take the time to say thanks for all of your efforts.

OKR

“@Anson - If the government has to borrow, they shouldn't be spending money on unnecessary things, like an air show, among other things.”

That’s what I said. So what is your problem?

Lack of Reality

“Hey Anson's Nephew--Maybe it would be easier to swallow if Obama wasn't taking the family on a $60 million vacation, or using Air Force One twice a week flying to fundraisers.”

Of course that is simply a rehashing of the right wing reports that have stated the so-called “vacation” (Remember when the righties kept telling us during the eight years, 1,020 vacation day Reign of error of The Criminal that “the president is never actually on vacation”?) is costing anywhere from$50 million to $300 million depending on the website it is taken from – and of course it is incorrect. No surprise there.

This is the bottom line – Obama WON, twice! Live with it!

The sequester was Obama's idea and only 1/4 of Congress is under Republican control. Dems have the Senate and the White House. If the Republicans have all this power that they, alone, are responsible for the sequester, we wouldn't be in the mess this country is in.

Uummm, wait a second here...the Kingman Air and Auto Show cannot go on because of lack of military involvement???

Oh wait, I think I see part of the problem here...Kingman Air and Auto Show,Inc.

Now I don't have a problem with a corporation putting on an event here in Kingman, and I don't even have a problem with them making a profit, even a huge profit if the folks attending the show feel that they got their money's worth, but given that the military didn't participate last year (pre- sequester, so one can't blame it on that or the economy), why does this corporation cancel this event at this point? Surely they must have considered the alternatives to our military participating in this event this year given the circumstances from last year...at least logic would take one down this path, wouldn't it?

Andrew Raynor, what is the real reason that this event, which has been going on for so many years, is being cancelled now? What's the real story?

I for one do not think it is political, but financial and it's sad that an event that has become a Kingman institution so to speak, much like the Fun Run and other activities, has possibly become victim of greed or incompetence.

Out of all of the Air/Auto Show participants, what was the percentage of military participation and what was the percentage of government dollars flowing into this corporation versus the amount from the private sector?

Perhaps the answers to these questions will provide we Kingmanites with the true reason why there will be no Air/Auto Show this year.

" I wonder how “necessary” it is for our military aircraft and pilots to participate in air shows."

It's not "necessary" at all, but people like to get a glimpse of what their tax dollars and military do. Air shows themselves are not "necessary".

Except for the demonstration teams...all smaller air shows and flyovers are included in the required training and flight hours for the various services.

A pilot that doesn't fly, after a certain period of time, has to undergo refresher training or requals (not sure what it's called). Aircraft need to be used as well. They can't just sit in the hanger for 2 yrs.

Many smaller venues have Guard and Reserve pilots and aircraft, who also need flight time.

Hope that clarifies...

I feel rather confident that we will hear from the usual suspects about how the President is destroying the joy of millions of people who like to watch military planes put through their maneuvers. Of course the facts are that had the Republiscums not forced the sequester none of this would have happened.

And of course the usual suspects also complain about unnecessary government spending and the wasting of taxpayer dollars. I wonder how “necessary” it is for our military aircraft and pilots to participate in air shows.
