New Reader Poll: Funding PBS?

Mitt Romney promised in the debate to eliminate funding for PBS (think Sesame Street and Big Bird) if it means borrowing more money and creating more debt.

• PBS is worthy of taxpayer support.

• That's a tough one.

• If we can't find the political will to cut PBS, how can hope to balance the budget?

• If Romney can get away with that, what's next, our free Obama-phones?

Feel free to leave comments below. Poll is located on the home page, lower right.

There are so many earmarks, and projects that only purpose is to make money for some private enterprise in some senator's home state. I will agree that everything needs review in our budget, but science, education, & research dollars are important. That's where PBS comes in. Forget about that tall yellow feathered avian creature, what is important for many is their science shows like Nova. The for-profit TV shows are shooting for as many watchers as possible (ratings) and for the most part ignore learning.
Much of PBS is already funded in part by public donations, check the donors for each program, fairly down the middle as far as political aspects are considered. Maybe it is time for a slow phasing out of Govt money, but we would lose something beyond understanding if it is destroyed instantly.

its because liberals are childish. when you say, look at what obama is/has done. they just scream, "well bush did it too, bush did it toooooo!" its the blame game and they two places on earth you are sure to find it is amongst 9 year old children and the liberal left. coincidentally they are both have partakers of sweet sugary kool-aid.

I'm confused. Exactly how does what Bush did justify your affirmative action president doing the same thing? I thought the day he was elected was the day everything changed. Are you now saying that obama is no better than Bush?

LOL

So, we have to believe what YOU say is true? Funny, I seem to recall you chastising others for that. Keep them government checks rolling in though....

PBS President Paul Kerger's salary - $632,233 a year. Sesame Workshop President Gary Knell gets $946,513. $1M stimulus to PBS netted 1.5 jobs. Keep the bird? Really? Plus, Sesame Street claims they don't need Gov't funds!

When you want something for your home, but you can't afford it, most of you don't buy it. What if we put 500 legislators in DC with that mindset? What if we found 500 who could balance a checkbook? Powerhouse! The debt's gotta go if we have to BBQ the Bird.

I'll answer that. Romney was just pointing out an example of the ridiculous places the federal govt. spends, (wastes), our tax money.

So I suppose lefties have a different opinion about what is ridiculous expenditures, but us conservatives would certainly get along without sending our tax money to PBS! Just that money alone could generate millions if put to use thru the SBA!

what PBS should be showing children is how life once was, but will never be again in America - coins were made of real silver, going out to play or explore alone or with chums was the norm and without concerns.....can we go back a few more years to when there was no nuclear power (that "wonderful" development which is 100% dependent upon a functioning power grid under ALL circumstances, and where there were never any unreported B52 nuclear accidents, etc.)? In fact - I know kids could hardly grasp the concept now - there was a time when food was natural, and prepared by Mom to be taken to school for lunch. The kids will still probably prefer to be database-monitored in the school cafeteria lunch line, pumped with poisonous vaccines, and be brainwashed into all those endless wars on behalf of a certain controlling Mideast "ally", but why not show them how it once was?

Maybe PBS can be saved with donations, I bet we won't be seeing your name on one though, right? Those government checks only go so far as you say....

“Romney brought up PBS because he was pointing out he was dumping anything that didn't meet his test on the debate.”

Well, it’s too bad that “his test” is in direct opposition to the majority of Americans – but then he’s known to be an anti-American sleaze so that is no surprise.

Yes, heaven forbid we teach our children how to be responsible with finite natural resources. Maybe if your grandchild is lucky, by the time they're grown, we won't have any left for them to worry about anyway.

@We don't give subsidies to oil companies. Like ALL companies, they get tax breaks.

They get subsidies. You, the American taxpayer, are getting to pay extra on your taxes each year, getting robbed at the pump and have your elected officials on their payroll in one way or another. They are laughing all the way to the bank.

Romney brought up PBS because he was pointing out he was dumping anything that didn't meet his test on the debate. PBSer Lehrer was sitting in front of him so he said PBS would be one of the ones going, sorry - liked Lehrer, Big Bird, no offense - but they don't meet his test of being necessary to be funded - especially since we are into borrowing from China.

@ Linda

Thank you for explaining the so called subsidies that the oil companies enjoy. It is just like the liberals to call a business tax deduction a subsidy when it involves an industry that they want to vilify. But when it comes to a company like GE, who is a big Obama supporter, the libs never talk about all the business tax deductions they took in order not to pay any corporate taxes in 2011.

In all actuality, the amount that the big oil companies make per gallon of gas is mere pennies. The federal, state and local governments make much more per gallon through the taxes that are added to the price we pay at the pump. The governments hand are a lot dirtier when it comes to gasoline than the evil big oil companies.
But again, you'll never hear that from the left.

"then why did Romney bring it to the table? Hmmmm......"

Because one of PBS's major "Stars" and one if its biggest liberal Jack***'s was sitting a few feet in front of him pretending to be a moderator. That made PBS a great target and gave Romney the chance to get a dig in at Jim Lehrer. Only a liberal would not have known that. Besides, 400+ million a year is a good place to start cutting.

Don't worry, when public funding is cut off all you liberals will make it up with donations. Oh wait, liberals only believe in spending other peoples money.

When I realize I have made a mistake on here, I like to correct it.

I don't believe it posted yet but I said Sesame Street made $215 Million last year in merchandise sales.

The actual amount is $515 million, 300 million more than I originally thought.

Obama has a really raunchy ad against Romney out including Big Bird. Now Sesame Street has said enough and asked them to please dump the ad. They are not interested in being in a political ad.

So far, they have simply said they would consider it.

Y'all really picked a winner this time!
