Tragic go-kart crash ends life of 14-year-old

KINGMAN - A 14-year-old boy who was critically injured in a go-kart accident at Neal Butler Park Sunday has died.

Carl Mecom was airlifted to Sunrise Medical Center after the go-kart he was riding in struck a cable fence at the park in the 3000 block of E. Jagerson Sunday evening. He passed away Tuesday night, according to hospital officials. According to a family friend, Carl's family elected to donate the boy's organs.

The accident happened as Mecom and two friends were taking turns using the go-kart on a dirt pedestrian path. Sheriff's Office Spokeswoman Trish Carter said it appears that Mecom tried to duck down to avoid the cable after the go-kart veered in its direction, which caused the boy's foot to press against the acceleration pedal. Bystanders at the park intervened and had to stop the go-kart after it struck the cable, she said.

The cable that the go-kart drove into is a steel cable suspended by posts about 3 feet off of the ground that runs the perimeter of the park. The cable was missing from the spot where the accident occurred and was replaced Wednesday with candles, condolence cards and red and black balloons left by friends.

An account has been set up at Mission Bank to help the family with medical and funeral expenses.

Just got back from Carl's memorial service. There must have been 500-600 attending! Quite a tribute to a really good young man. The world will miss him, but Heaven is his home now.

Our hearts go out to the families of this poor child, taken too soon.
Just another reason they should consider something for the young people to do with their free time. A safe way to burn energy that will keep them off the streets and entertain them. So tragic.
