KINGMAN - Authorities said Tuesday that an escaped Mohave County Jail inmate was camping at a rest stop in Yucca for some of the six days he was on the run.

Darren Morrison was arrested Monday evening after someone spotted him trying to break in to the apartment he shared with his wife in the 300 block of Copper Street.

He ran from the apartment as detectives responded, prompting a massive response by law enforcement to establish a perimeter around the area. He was taken into custody around 5 p.m. in a wash area behind a fast food restaurant and a convenience store located just south of Interstate 40 and east of Beale Street.

Mohave County Sheriff's Spokeswoman Trish Carter said investigators found a backpack full of food along with a rifle at the encampment. Those items are believed to have been provided by Morrison's wife, 24-year-old Ashley Anne Morrison, who was arrested the same day of the escape and is charged with conspiracy in the incident.

Morrison escaped from custody Jan. 18 after he ran from the transport van while he and another inmate were being unloaded by a single corrections officer behind the Mohave County Superior Courthouse. Morrison was scheduled to appear in court that morning for a routine hearing in a domestic violence case involving his wife.

Surveillance footage of the escape shows Morrison stepping out of the van, then shedding his shackles as he runs off on foot. The guard chases after him while the second inmate remains standing next to the van observing the situation. Investigators are still not sure how Morrison was able to get out of his restraints, but they are looking into whether he was able to obtain a key somehow, possibly purchased online.

A person who witnessed the escape from the Department of Economic Security building told authorities that they saw a tan colored sedan following Morrison and that the escaped inmate appeared to be communicating in an animated way with the driver.

That tan sedan was reportedly located a short time after the escape in the parking lot of the apartment complex in the 300 block of Copper Street where the Morrisons lived.

The owner of the sedan was present at the apartment when Ashley Morrison was arrested and told authorities that she allowed Ashley to use her car that morning to go to Darren's court hearing. She also said that she and Ashley had gone to Walmart the night before and bought food, along with a compass, knife and flashlight.

The owner of the car denied having any prior knowledge of an escape attempt. Kingman Police detectives checked Walmart surveillance tapes and confirmed that the woman and Ashley Morrison purchased the items.

Court documents indicate that a recorded jail conversation between the Morrisons indicated that he was planning on using the items to live in the wilderness. It's not clear according to the document when the conversation took place.

Darren Morrison is being held in the highest-level security pod at the jail. His wife is reportedly being held on the opposite end of the jail where she remains on suicide watch.

Wow, I love how people make judgements and lie about things they have NO clue about. First off, Im not a druggie and I have NEVER done drugs. This is what happens when ur put in a cell for 5 days with no shower and your on suicide watch and stressed out. Mug shots arent supposed to be pretty. As for my decisions in the escape, I did 7.5 months in county and 4 in prison. I paid my price and learned my lesson. Does that mean I regret it or would do it different, yeah sure does! I was pregnant when My Husband went to jail and had a eptopic pregnancy, which caused me to be impulsive and help him break out. So Im a devoted wife, Hey I could be worse things. Thats love for ya, stupid yes, but love is sometimes stupid. Loved reading about what my sister in law said (brittany davis). Take responsibility for your own problems. Worry about yourself and YOUR family, and I will do the same. -December 2012

Ashley made many attempts to ruin my life and she ruined my relationship with my brother. They both deserve to sit in prision for a long time. My family has tried numerous times to help Darren and he always goes back to the same lifestyle. As for Ashley she is Crazy!!! And she wears pounds of make up so to you fools who think shes hot look at the real pic

@anonymous anonymous: Let me guess, you also know Ashley, and are trying to make a mockery of those who do feel the behavior of this young couple is foolish? I actually do happen to know this young lady. On a personal level. I never said I was better than anybody, I was simply pointing out that other people commenting clearly could not identify a person using meth based on a photo. Had you read deeper into my comment, you would see that it is not me boasting, or feeling high an mighty. If me stating that Ashley is a crackhead is offensive to you or her, perhaps she should put down the pipe and do something that she is not ashamed of. I would be completely offended to be called a tweeker or crackhead, hence the reason I don't use meth. I do, however smoke weed, please feel free to call me a pot head if you would like to. No offence taken. Ignorant Fool. (P.S. If me calling you an Ignorant Fool offends you, please stop acting like one.)

I hate to see kids getting off to a wrong start. Its okay to have hobbies, but when they start to cloud your judgement, its time to quit them, and find something more positive to do. Like things that don't get you locked up for fighting with the one person you should be able to count on, your spouse. Who obviously was there for him, I hope he recognizes that fact. Even at the risk of her own freedom she was there for him. PAY ATTENTION DARREN!!

I always enjoy spotting the fake poster's who swear they know the person in a story always give themselves away with the use of "habitual name some how connected to the story", I do believe we have a cyber troll who has no life, borders on being a Marquis DeSade devotee in their tastes for entertainment since they thrive on human misery stories, and seem happy only when they can find someone to look down on, find fault with and pretend they are better than! I don't see anything good in this story two sad people, in love, destined for prison just how can any "normal human being find joy & glee is such? I venture if one could peel back the anonymous nature of these computer screens the sadistic xenophobes who seem to inhabit this domain would be as sad or worse than these two sad souls!

Instead of commenting on the 'hottie' vs. after booking photos OR the lack of intelligence of Ashley or Darrin Morrison OR any opinions I may have about their drug use OR any opinions I have about the escape, I'd like to thank the local law enforcement for their hard efforts in recapturing this criminal. Good job guys!

David Coop are you blind or just in denial? Those SPEED BUMPS give it away.

It's sad to say but meth heads are easy to find in Mohave County. I'm just saying.

Article comment by: Meth For Kids

How many give the generic Meth to their kids? It's called Ritalin... and yes it is being abused and may have a stronger effect on younger children's brains than the stuff brewed in kitchen sinks for the the slightly older abuser. I know a lot of people like to call what is being sold on the streets methamphetamine, but what comes off the streets could be almost anything in the meth family of drugs. Hard on the heart and hard on the mind! The actual name for Ritalin is Methylin or in long form is Methylphenidate. It possesses structural similarities to amphetamine, but its pharmacological effects are more similar to those of cocaine, and is longer lasting than cocaine. Many of today's users were created by their parents and doctors, no big surprise.
Just noticed a bit of hypocrisy seemingly in the comments about people that are abusing substances, this epidemic didn't come from nowhere. Do some research.

Will toss in some links for info but may be deleted if paper does not wish them to be included.

Here is a site about kids deaths from Ritalin
Here is a user trying to abuse ritalin:

@Bart Simpson

Am I missing something, or do you have a Disney perception? Where is it reported that Ashley is involved with Meth, or anything drug for that matter? From what we know, the two photos would only be a before-and-after of incarceration, domestic-abuse (PTSD & Depression), and a lack of cosmetics (such as makeup and hair products). Despite what Disney teaches us, appearance doesn't determine good, evil, innocence, or guilt.

I know Ashley personally, and the truth is, she was on meth in her "before" and "after" pictures. Makeup does wonders. She has, is, and my guess is, will comtinue to be a crackhead. Good job spotting out them druggies--y'all are just so observant!

Article comment by: big difference

I think the difference in Ashley's photo can best be described as ....The face of METH.

Its the only way a very beautiful young woman can go from picture one and end up at picture two. In a very short period of time.

Now I think she may just belong right where she is for a long time.

Maybe givin time her former self will re appear.

It says he was being unloaded by a single officer. Does that mean there was only one officer that did the transporting, or was there a second one still in the van, or elsewhere?

"Darren Morrison is being held in the highest-level security pod at the jail."

So I guess he'll be out picking up trash on I-40 until his next court date?

Ok, Now it becomes a little more clear. Ashley's before picture and her current mugshot could easily be used for "before and after" images of the face of meth. Drugs cause so much pain, destruction of lives and ultimately, death. That is why I have absolutely zero tolerance for drug dealers. In my opinion, drug dealers are every bit as bad, if not worse, than serial killers. The lowest scum on earth. If Asley is struggling with drug addiction, I hope that she can get some help.

Unless the guy is Hudini my guess is the key was probably purchased from a detention officer. There is absolutely nothing on the up and up in Mohave County Government.
My opinion. Just saying. This place is a joke.

Who purchased the key? How did it get into the jail and his possession? Does the woman neighbor know more than she admits? Why did he get out at Yucca and not just keep going?

This just keeps getting more interesting.
