KINGMAN - Kingman High junior and trumpet player Wyatt Taylor didn't let two years of being passed over for the Northwest Arizona Regional Orchestra stop him from auditioning for a third time this year.

His resiliency paid off. Taylor was one of 18 Kingman High School students to be selected to join the orchestra this year.

"Oh my God, it feels so great," Taylor said. "I was in shock when I found out."

Of the 40 band students who auditioned this year, 15 made it, said KHS Band Director Michael Schreiber. Three choir students and one alternate were selected as well.

The Kingman students left for Flagstaff Thursday for two days of rehearsal with other members of the orchestra in preparation for a performance Saturday.

The orchestra includes students from schools throughout northwest Arizona, and it's no easy task to be accepted.

Students must audition in front of judges who give them a score that decides whether they get in the group or don't, Schreiber said.

"It's very much an individual thing," he said. "It's all on them."

Last year, 10 students from Kingman High were selected.

Those selected for the regional orchestra have the option of auditioning for the All-State band.

"It's very hard to make All-State," Schreiber said.

Taylor had gotten used to not being selected, but he kept trying anyway.

"I pushed through, and I made it," he said.

Nerves got in the way of his auditions in the past, but not this year.

"I was more relaxed this year," he said. "I have more confidence."

Despite his confidence, he's still a little nervous about Saturday's show. Most of his nerves have to deal with the fact that he'll be practicing and performing with a lot of students he's never met. Nevertheless, he's ready.

Kingman High students often compete with bigger schools where there are more resources and more opportunity, Schreiber said. It says a lot about their ability when they compete and succeed, he added.

Our 4 choral students were really amazing, as well, and I am honored to work with them. The entire group performed yesterday at Coconino and did a tremendous jobl. They brought honor to KHS and the town of Kingman in their work ethic, abilities and behavior on this very strenuous weekend. Thanks to the parents for your support and the students for your amazing work and talent!

Congratulations to all 18 students. I recognize 3 or 4 students from my time in Youth Services at the County Library and I am proud to see you doing so great. My best wishes to all 18 of you and have fun.
