Jen Miles: Winner, Public Services

For 19 years, Miles has made "major contributions" to Kingman's youth, education and workforce development, according to nominator JC Amberlyn, Miles' daughter and the Kingman Daily Miner's photographer.

She also played a role in unifying the myriad animal advocacy groups in the area to work together. The success of the coalition is plain to see, as animal shelters in the area have become more humane.

Miles earned a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from Auburn University and has a masters in business administration from Stanford University.

Since 2003, Miles has managed the Workforce Development department for the Mohave County Community and Economic Development Center.

She helps job seekers with resumés, training, applications and work readiness assistance.

She also helps youth.

Miles is goal-oriented and a self-starter. These qualities, wrote Amberlyn, led Miles to help create the Coalition Youth Team, popularly known as COYOTE, which helps "at-risk youth develop into outstanding citizens who are responsible and productive members of the workforce."

"I think she is imminently deserving of this award, as she truly makes the change she wants to see in the world," wrote Amberlyn.

Marcia Beecham: Winner, Volunteerism

A 16-year Kingman resident, Beecham has dedicated her life to helping those in need, young and old.

Wrote Kathy Giberti and Regina Musumeci in their letter of nomination: "Marcia has been instrumental in collecting everything from clothing, soaps and shampoos for our less fortunate to making sure there are no names hanging on any Angel Tree at Christmas. She has baked and delivered cookies to our seniors and stayed to chat when possible."

The State Farm Insurance employee joined the Powerhouse Kiwanis shortly after arriving in Kingman, and she began the Clothe the Kids program.

Other projects she has been involved in include Dollars for Scholars, Bugs, which is an awards program for students who bring up their grades, and various senior projects.

"If you are looking for a role model in being a volunteer, Marcia Beecham fills the bill," wrote her nominators.

Congratulations to Jen Miles! I have known Jen since I started working with the Kingman Area Chamber of Commerce in the 90s, and she is a wonderful person, fully deserving of this award. Way to go, Jen! (Plus you look really hot in this pic.!)
