Kingman legislator's children arrested for heroin trafficking
News of children's arrest stunned Goodale

Miner Staff Reporter

Five people, including the adult son and daughter of a state representative and member of Kingman Unified School District Board, were arrested following a 3-month long investigation by police into heroin trafficking.

Stephanie Lynn Goodale, 31, and Michael Randolph Goodale, 27, were arrested during separate incidents Wednesday night. Michael Goodale and his girlfriend, Chyla Lee Cass, 19, were arrested at the Maverick Gas Station on Highway 68 in Golden Valley along with two Las Vegas residents police allege were bringing large quantities of heroin into Mohave County to sell.

Stephanie Goodale was arrested at a home in the 2800 block of Walapai Avenue. Tax records show that the home, along with one in the 4000 block of Red Hill Road also involved in the investigation, belong to William and Rep. Doris Goodale.

Kingman Police Capt. Rusty Cooper said police had been watching

the home on Red Hill Road and observed numerous drug transactions taking place during the week while the homeowners were out of town.

He did not identify the homeowners specifically but said they did not appear to have any knowledge that alleged drug deals were taking place.

Doris Goodale said and her husband first learned of the arrests when they got a call asking them to come to the police station that night. She said she was aware her daughter had developed an addiction to pain medication in the past but said neither she nor her husband had any idea that either of their children were involved with heroin - or that drug deals were allegedly taking place in their homes.

"The only thing I can really say is that as a parent I am horrified and devastated," Goodale said. "You love your children but you can be devastated by the choices they make."

Cooper said a half ounce of heroin was found on Las Vegas suspect Penny Jean Bell, 51, when she was arrested at the Maverick Station with her boyfriend, 53-year-old Stanley Joe Williams, also of Las Vegas. Police also seized $6,000 in cash found on Bell and Michael Goodale.

Paraphernalia was found following a consent search of Michael's bedroom at the Red Hill home. Goodale said she and husband did not hesitate to allow officers in their homes and credited the officers for their professionalism in helping the parents navigate a difficult situation.

All five individuals arrested are charged with felony counts of possession of narcotic drugs for sale, possession of narcotic drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia and trafficking in narcotic drugs.

Goodale said she understands that the arrests of her children opens her up to attacks from political opponents, but that she now has to be a mother over a politician. That includes supporting her children emotionally and encouraging them to get treatment. It will not, however, include financial assistance.

"We will not be bailing them out of jail, we will not be hiring attorneys," she said. "They will be on their own for this."

Kids, parents, sisters, brothers, wife or husband most families doen't allow their loved ones to be thrown to the wolves. Most give their family members the benefit of the doubt and come to their aid in times of need to insure that justice is served.

It is so easy to judge. just like it is easy to be blind to what our loved ones are doing. Where is the compassion and the empathy for these parents regardless of their profession. I totally feel for them and anyone that goes through this. Of course no one knows unless they have been through it.

"I guess the political career comes before the kids."

The kids? They are 31 and 27 years old. They are hardly kids.

Strange how since the prison popped up Kingman has a very serious heroin problem. The police need to step up and take some more dealers out. It makes one wonder why some continue to get away with it and others don't, what is it? Selective Justice? A blind eye? We need to save our youth from this.

RE: Wait a minute,
You are very astute. Trafficking is not use. (Although the chances are fairly great that if you traffic, you also use). Another assumption is that the Goodale's daughter was caught trafficking. Where does the article mention that? She was arrested yes, but she was not at the Maverick station, nor was there even any mention of anything found in her room or on her person. Thirdly, everyone assumes that all the Goodales lived under the same roof. Yet if you read carefully, you will notice they own two houses.

Doris did not break the law! Attacks are to hinder her chances for a win in the election. I would like to know if any of the candidates running against Doris has any skeletens in their background that would cause concern to voters! Anyone involved with fights, any other minor incidents that can be discussed negatively? Come on, quit the political attacks and let Doris deal with her family problems with respect.

I have known this family for many years. People on here attacking the family is wrong in my opinion. Stephanie has been struggling with medical issues for a long time and with these medical issues came pain. She started taking pain medication for the pain and before she knew it, she was addicted. This is what I call, medically induced pain pill addiction. With any addiction, it is hard to stop. I have been struggling myself with the addiction of cigarettes and food. Most of us would not agree that it is the same thing but I disagree. An addiction is an addiction. In the state of Arizona it is hard to find the rehab needed to stop. I have spoke to Stephanie countless of times about her addiction and all she ever wanted was to be the Stephanie that she remembered being before the addiction took over. I want all the people on here that are attacking the family to take the time to stop something that has become habit for you and just stop without any assistance. If you are a coffee drinker, stop drinking coffee. If you love your soda, stop drinking soda. I guarantee that you will reconsider what you have said. This family needs the support of all of us to make it through this tough time in their lives. Doris has been representing us for four years now and now it is our time to represent her and her family at their time of need. My dear friend fell into the hands of addiction and she nor her family need negativity at this time. The comments that I have read are hurtful and just plain wrong. Doris, you have my support politically and personally. I love you and your family from the bottom of my heart.

I guarantee that both Doris and Bill will have my vote when the elections come! I know the "stock" they come from and I know the principles they live by. As parents we raise our children trying to provide the tools they will need to live clean, respectable, productive, law-abiding lives when they become adults. These parents did all that. There comes the time when parents are to let the children leave and hopefully make good choices. Did everyone notice there were two residences and perhaps all the family did not live under the same roof? It is not a fault to provide a residence if you are blessed with the means. How many of the critical people here provided vehicles for their graduating children? Stephanie and Michael have the correct tools but have made wrong choices. And now they are facing the consequences of their choices supported by their parents unconditional love. I commend you Doris and Bill for your strength in letting your son and daughter be held accountable for their actions. I know the pain.

Of course she wouldn't bail them out . That's just a way to try to get them votes .She is hoping for sympathy votes now .

I don't see how anyone would vote for someone who was so blind to what was going on inside her own home . I'm curious to know how many she busted during her time as a P.O. for the same thing her kid was doing . Something really fishy about all of this . She won't get my vote i can tell you that .

I'm a little surprised that these parents aren't willing to help bail their kids out and get them decent legal reprsentation.

Pretty cold blooded. I guess the political career comes before the kids.

A 31-year old and a 27-year old still living at home? Both adult children unemployed with kids of their own? Neither adult child has reached an education level sufficient enough to support themselves? And only now the parents think they have a problem? Only after they learn both adult kids are now selling herion out of the family home?Fortuntately, we have law enforcement who stopped Bill and Doris' kids from destroying any more lives.
Drug dealers are the worst kind of criminal because they prey on the weeknesses of the addicts which they create and from which they profit.

I'm confused. Most of these comments are implying that these full grown adults 'made a mistake' and were caught up with addiction. No where does this article state they were arrested for illegal 'use' of heroin. They were all arrested for 'trafficking' heroin. What exactly is 'trafficking'? Isn't that transporting for sale of heroin? Then, they lived in their parents home, drove their car? Neither one of these people had a JOB, but their parents wondered what they did all day? Didn't demand that they do something with their life?

It is easy for those who want to blame the parents. Just ask any parent who went through a situation with their child and it is amazing what children can do without parent knowledge. Why were the Goodales gone from the home? Doris Goodale was representing YOU! Send them your name and phone number and the next time she is out representing YOU you can baby sit a 30 yr. old and a 27 year old.

A couple of points to ponder. Goodale was a probation officer for years and we are now expected to believe she could not recognize a pair of drug users living in her home? And how about her vote on Colorado City – did someone get to her and say, “Dump this bill or we’ll blow the whistle on your kids?” Aren’t conspiracy theories fun?

Thank you Bill & Doris for your honest and open comments regarding a heart-breaking situation. Hopefully we can all learn from what you are going through. Having a politician say she is a mother first is music to my ears! Our prayers go out to your family for strength to heal and come back together.

I admire the Goodale's for not bailing them out of jail, I don't believe that they did a good parenting job when they were young, The young adults were not taught morals,
(spare the rod spoil the child )

Doesn't seem to matter who your parents are, young adults sometimes make bad choices in their lives.

It appears this is the case in their situation, good people making wrong choices.

How is it possible for a former PROBATION officer of 33 Years to NOT recognize her children LIVING AT HOME! using HER car, was not a druggie or a heroin user???? This "I'm shocked act" is pathetic. Also her sons activity could be used against her to sway legislation (Colorado City) if she had been blackmailed. I believe she knew. How couldnt she??? IT WAS HER HOME!

Stephanie was a dear friend of mine back in high school and her family influenced us in many positive ways long ago. I applaud Mrs. Goodale as she was always a good mother. No one is perfect and I think it is a shame that because of this she could be targeted. We all do our best and we all go through rough patches. I think that her statement of being a mom before a politician speaks volumes of her good character and that should be taken into account also. It has been more than a decade since I have seen Stephanie but she was an amazing person with a big heart. God Bless you all.
