Obituary: Charles E. Zumwalt

On April 8, 2013, Charles Ervin Zumwalt passed away at his home on the ZSummers Ranch in Catron County, N.M. Chuck (Zuni) was born Nov. 9, 1933, in Lordsburg, N.M. to Charles (Alec) and Mildred (Dinwiddie) Zumwalt. Chuck grew up in the Silver City, N.M., area and then spent most of his life working in the copper and gold mining industries in Kingman, Battle Mountain, Nev., and throughout the world. In 2003, he and his wife, Carma, came home to the family ranch where they shared their last golden years together.

Chuck was preceded in death by his father, Alec, his mother, Mildred, and his sister, Betty. Just one short year ago he lost the love of his life, Carma Nell (Summers) Zumwalt, his wife of 59½ years. He is survived by his brother, Ron (Dee) Zumwalt of Monte Vista, Colo.; his daughters, Connie (Joe) Shaeffer of Waianae, Hawaii, and Seobaghn (Bob) Arambula of Flagstaff, and his son, Sean (Laura) Zumwalt of Denver, NC. Chuck is also survived by four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many extended family members and friends.

Chuck's wishes were for a cremation and no funeral services. As his surviving family mourns privately their loss of him, in the reunion of their beloved parents they will rejoice.

Burnham Mortuary, Eagar, handled the arrangements

I had the pleasure of working with Chuck in Battle Mountain. He was a very straight forward honest individual. A man of integrity and just when you didn't expect it, he would say something witty. You would look over at him, and he had a little grin and twinkle in his eye. I extend by deepest sympathies and condolences to the Zumwalt family.

I know what you are going through. I had the highest regard for your mom and dad. I can remember the time when our moms played ball together, and you and I played ball in the gym. .
With all my love Rusty and Chris Bridges

Dear Zumwalt Family,

I have always admired the strong way your Dad led & taught your family. He had a great smile and sense of humor something he passed on to you. Most of all, I loved how he showed his great love for you & Carma!

May your tears and heartaches turn to joyful memories to sustain you in years to come.

I can only imagine your parents exuberant meeting...what a day!
