Lady Bulldogs finish strong in win over Bears

KINGMAN - Entering the season opener with Prescott Valley Bradshaw Mountain, Kingman High girls tennis coach Traci Rosenbach was looking at the match as a good early season test for her team.

After a nerve wracking doubles portion of the match in which the Lady Bulldogs went 1-3, KHS made up for it with four singles wins for a 5-4 overall match win.

"I was very concerned going into singles," Rosenbach said.

The doubles pair of Natalie Casson and Gabby Huffer pulled out a 9-8 win while fellow doubles players Courtney McCans/Alejandrina Zapata and Rorie Nelson/Lara Iozzo didn't fare as well. Nelson/Iozzo dropped their match 8-2 while McCans/Zapata fell 6-8.

In singles play, the Lady Bulldogs picked up wins by Casson (6-2, 6-0), Huffer (6-1, 6-4) and McCans (6-3, 6-2). Kingman lost matches by Iozzo (6-0, 7-5) and Nelson (3-6, 6-2, 10-5 tiebreaker) with the overall match being decided by Zapata's 7-6, 4-6 and 10-5 tiebreaker victory to secure the win.

"Alejandrina played a great match," Rosenbach said. "She stayed strong and focused throughout. I was very proud of her. I believe Lara and Rorie let the pressure of a varsity match get the better of them. They seemed nervous and I know they will play better next time.

"All in all, this match was great for us to pull out the win. I think it showed the girls what we need to work on and that we need to work hard this year to get to where we want to be."

KHS will travel to Lake Havasu today before hosting Prescott at 3:30 p.m. Thursday for the home opener.
