KINGMAN - If old-fashion smash-mouth football is what is preferred, then the Lee Williams-Sedona Red Rock game at 7 p.m. today at LWHS should meet those expectations.

The reports on Red Rock (6-2) say that the Scorpions want to run first but are willing to pass when situations warrant.

"We have to stop that run and force them to pass," LWHS coach Eugene Kramer said. "They really like their fullback (No. 12 Mason Aronson), and their tailback (No. 33 Andre Davis) is really fast."

To get that done, LWHS (2-6) is going to have to secure its tackles at first contact and not allow the Scorpions to gain much yardage after impact.

"Every week our tackling has gotten better," Kramer said. "But this week we have to be at the top of our game."

When the Volunteers have the ball, they will be looking to run the ball as well. It's going to be a true test for LWHS as Red Rock has at times put six bodies on the line of scrimmage.

"They will try to stop the run, and we'll accept that challenge," Kramer said. "We will run the ball and pass when necessary."

The coach and his team all know that mistakes will need to be held at a minimum to pull off the upset over the No. 18-ranked Scorpions.

"They are well coached and are a very fundamentally sound team," Kramer said. "If you give them an inch, they'll take mile. If they see something where they can beat you, they will exploit that."

For just the second time this season, LWHS is entering a game coming off a victory. The Volunteers upended Pinon, 41-16, and Red Rock suffered just its second loss of the season in a 40-28 defeat against No. 10-ranked Williams.

"Our kids' spirits are high," the coach said. "They're feeling a lot better about themselves. Their emotions are better because it's nice for them to come to practice off of a win."

If the game goes as expected, it should be a tough battle when the game enters the fourth quarter. Though Kramer doesn't necessarily see the Volunteers with an advantage, he does believe they won't be at a disadvantage.

"We've been conditioning since June and summer workouts," he said. "They've busted their tails and are in as good of shape as any team in the state."
