KINGMAN - Mix in a group of freshmen and sophomores with a seasoned wrestling program, it's most likely not going to go the younger squad's way. That's exactly what happened to Lee Williams High Wednesday in Phoenix, as the three-time defending Division III state champion Thunderbird Chiefs showed the Volunteers just how far they need to grow in a 72-0 win.
"The kids never backed down," LWHS coach Tom Jonseck said. "They went out there and gave it their best effort."
Nick Verville (120 pounds) gave an outstanding performance despite dropping his first match of the year, 15-10. Verville is 6-1 for Lee Williams (4-4).
"We have a great group of kids on the team," Jonseck said. "We learn more and more every time we step on the mat."
The Volunteers get their next opportunity at 4 p.m. Monday in Laughlin. Lee Williams defeated Laughlin 42-30 Saturday at the Laughlin Invitational.
