KINGMAN - Kingman High went 3-4 last weekend at the Mohave Wrestling Invitational in Bullhead City as Richie Williams placed second in the 220-pound weight class.
The Bulldogs picked up wins over Wickenburg, (44-34), Parker (58-22) and Las Vegas Mojave (37-36). KHS fell to Las Vegas Liberty (52-21), Pahrump, Nev., Las Vegas Shadow Ridge (57-17) and host Bullhead City Mohave (42-36).
"We wrestled really strong on Friday," said KHS coach Brandon Clor. "We ran into Liberty, which was really good, and we ran into Pahrump, which was really good. They are quality teams."
In addition to Williams' second-place finish after going 7-0 in pool play, the Bulldogs had a pair of fourth-place finishers in Josh Estensen (132) and C.J. Gore (160), both going 6-1 in pool play.
Andrew Leyva (170) finished third after compiling a 7-0 record in pool play. He holds the school record in career wins with 119.
Bodhi Mayo (182) and Russell Williams (220) finished sixth. Mayo was 4-3 in pool play while Williams was 5-2 in pool play. Williams' points didn't count toward the overall team total.
KHS traveled to Lake Havasu Wednesday for a five-team meet. The Bulldogs will have a week off before heading to Peoria for the sectional meet Feb. 1-2.
"The big thing we were trying to avoid is losing matches in general because we are working on seeding for state," Clor said.
The state meet will be held Feb. 8-9 at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott.
