KINGMAN - With three matches this week, Kingman High boys tennis coach Ryan Gery is hoping to get some wins and build some momentum heading into spring break next week.

"I would like to have a few wins under our belt before we get into the break," Gery said. "But if that's not the case, then that's not the case. If we don't have any wins then it will be a much-needed time off for the guys."

The Bulldogs are coming off the Kiwanis Tournament in Peoria this past weekend, a day after opening the season Thursday against Prescott Valley Bradshaw Mountain.

Monday, KHS returned home to host Flagstaff, where they fell 6-3.

"I don't think they will get too down on themselves," Gery said Monday afternoon before the match was finished.

Alex Noel won his singles match over Tristan Connor, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4. Noel, along with doubles partner Patrick Chastain, won their doubles match over Matt Ryan and Zach Hernandez 8-4.

Chastain also won his singles match over Stefan Schmeitenknop, 6-2, 5-7 and a10-7 tiebreaker.

Other match scores included: Gregory Franklin's loss to Ryan, 4-6, 6-2, (10-6 tiebreaker); Trayson Rubio falling to Zach Hernandez, 4-6, 7-5, (10-5); David Caddick falling to Austin Watson, 0-6, 7-5, (10-4 tiebreaker); and Jonathon Marquez falling to Justin Bangle 6-1, 6-0. Other doubles scores: Flagstaff's Schmietenknop/Connor 9-8 (10-6) win over Franklin/Caddick and Bangle/Kyle Jacobsen's 8-3 win over Rubio/Marquez.

"I hope with the next couple of matches that we play, that our confidence will increase and we will be able to win a couple," Gery said. "As far as everything else goes, I'm looking forward to the year. This is tough - it's a grind. We had the tournament last week and now we have four matches this week. Hopefully, we can get our legs fresh and get some wins here."

KHS will travel to Prescott on Thursday before hosting Lake Havasu on Friday. However, Friday's match could be in jeopardy with the forecast calling for a 40 percent chance of rain and a high temperature of 52.
