Prep baseballers earn section honors
Skubal, McCord, Tomlinson and Butler awarded for seasons

KINGMAN - Kingman Academy pitcher Tarik Skubal, catcher Westin McCord and shortstop Austin Tomlinson have been selected to the Arizona Interscholastic Association Division III, Section 2 First Team. For Kingman High, Lukas Butler has been named to the D-II, Section 5 Second Team.

Kingman Academy finished the season ranked No. 13 in D-III, going 23-7-1 overall and advanced to the second round of the state tournament before losing to No. 4 ranked Page, 8-4.

Skubal was the ace of the Tigers' staff, pitching 71-1/3 innings in 14 appearances. According to maxpreps.com, Skubal went 4-0 with an earned run average of 1.37 and surrendered just 14 earned runs. He struck out 118 batters and walked 31.

Skubal threw a perfect game while striking out 14 to lead the Academy to a first round win in the state tournament over Willcox, 1-0.

McCord played in 30 games for the Tigers and batted .533, including 10 doubles, three triples and four home runs. McCord struck out just four times and scored 50 runs and stole 37 bases.

Behind the plate, McCord had a perfect fielding percentage of 1.000 on 239 chances. He made 213 putouts and had 26 assists.

Tomlinson batted .371 for the Academy and struck out only six times. He scored 42 runs, stole 12 bases and belted out nine doubles.

On the diamond, Tomlinson had a .904 fielding percentage on 114 chances and turned six double plays.

Kingman High went 10-18-1 and Butler batted .400 in 28 games. He scored 24 runs and had nine doubles. A utility player, Butler had a .920 fielding percentage on 100 chances.

He had 67 putouts and 25 assists for the season.
