Kingman crunched in state opener
Phoenix team romps in Senior Little League tournament

KINGMAN - It wasn't the travel that did Kingman in at the state senior Little League Tournament Tuesday night at Prescott. They just ran into a better team.

Kingman, which came home Tuesday morning from Yuma after winning the District 9 championship, found itself back on the road and back in action Tuesday night against Holiday Park from west Phoenix.

Holiday Park jumped to a 10-0 lead in the top of the first inning, and from there Kingman manager Rick Ogborn counted his losses and started to play for the next day in a 21-0 defeat.

"The kids just put their heads down and they were done. I think them scoring 10 runs in the first half of the inning, they just gave up right away," Ogborn said. "We threw everybody. At that point we knew that we weren't going to get anywhere in that game, so we saved all of our pitchers."

Kingman was originally scheduled to play Wednesday but the game was postponed due to unplayable field conditions. The game was rescheduled for Thursday, when they were set to take on another team from the Phoenix area.

Kingman advanced to the state tournament after defeating Blythe Monday night in the District 9 title game. The game was originally scheduled for lastweek in Blythe but was moved to Yuma on Saturday. Kingman fell 7-6 to force the decisive game on Monday.

Despite the travel and quick turnaround, Ogborn didn't feel they were factors. It was just a case of the other team being better.

"They were really good. I wouldn't be surprised if they are in the championship of the tournament. They are going to be one of the tournament champions," Ogborn said.

Regardless of the outcome of Thursday's game, Ogborn said he was pleased with the team and the successes they've enjoyed.

"I don't know if any of theses kids have gone to a state tournament," Ogborn said. "It was definitely an experience. It was really cool to play at the state level."
