LAUGHLIN, Nev. - When Shannon Reid entered the grand ballroom of Avi Resort and Casino Saturday night, she was greeted by the loudest cheer a fighter received for the night.

And the hometown favorite didn't disappoint in her amateur lightweight bout with Nicole Sontag of Utah in the Mixed Martial Arts World Fighting Championships.

A minute after entering the cage, Reid had improved her record to 2-1 with a technical knockout of Sontag.

"I get so much support from the home crowd," Reid said. "I can't say enough about them. What a tough fight for her to come into. It was like coming in to a pack of wolves and fighting someone that is the hometown favorite.

"She caught me with a straight down the pipe. I think that was the only damage I took. She tried to choke me and I got out of it. I did what I could to finish her. I thank the crowd for supporting me and the coaches and my sponsor. I train three months for one minute."

Part of Reid's training included a strict organic diet.

After Saturday's victory, Reid was ready to splurge.

"I'm going to smash some Cinnamon Toast Crunch now and enjoy life," she said.

Kingman's other fighter didn't fare as well. Brian Skinner lost his WFC lightweight bout with Las Vegas' Dustin Chevalier after Chevalier caught Skinner with a rear naked choke hold to cause Skinner to tap out at 1 minute and 17 seconds in the first round.

"I ended up giving him my back, and that's my weakest area and that's something I will fix before I fight again," Skinner said. "I will fix my ground game. I've never been beat up on my feet. It's always my ground.

"Props to him - he was the better guy. It shouldn't have been, but he was, and it sucks."

Skinner falls to 1-1 in his pro career and said he plans to do some jujitsu in order to build up his ground game while also reviewing the mistakes that were made and fixing them for the next fight.

"Pro is so much different than amateur. You just can't make any mistakes like I did in the first round," Skinner said. "That's what makes pro, pro. They have better decision-making, and I have to learn it."

Jack a lope? "None of these kids have a clue what martial arts are" that's a bold statement. However ill entertain you.If you read the article it says mixed martial arts and that's the sport they compete in.You state you have an idea of what martial arts are and this is not? and what makes your training anymore formal than anyone else's?Do you know either of these two and know who?how? are what they train?you claim to be a martial artist and your comments do not reflect that budo is a part of your life.neither of fighters would say anything bad about you so to come on here and bash two people you don't know shows your no martial artists unless you missed the whole RESPECT that every martial art teaches.

@jack I believe you are mistaken last time I checked MuayThai, boxing, jui jitsue, wrestling were all martial arts and being a part of a military combatants program doesn't make you anymore of a martial artist than these kids I know Brian very well and he is a humble and TRUE mixed martial artist and if you don't believe it he train at stillstanding Muay Thai I'm sure him or any of his training partners would be more than willing to show there martial arts qualifications
