KINGMAN - A Golden Valley man has filed for an injunction to prevent Mohave County from continuing to enforce its new polices that prohibit politicking on county grounds, require all weapons to be checked at the door and establish a new dress code for visitors.
According to court records, Jim Kanelos filed for an injunction on Monday against the county, the county Board of Supervisors, County Manager Ron Walker and County Attorney Matt Smith.
In the complaint, Kanelos states that the county's new policies violate his First Amendment rights along with his rights under the Arizona Constitution and his rights to due process, peacefully assemble and right for redress of grievances.
He asks that the court grant him an injunction until the constitutionality of the county's new policies is determined. "I felt that my civil rights were being tromped on. I feel that the county has overstepped its bounds where it comes to the U.S. and Arizona constitutions," he said.
"I hope that more citizens will step up and file suits. Our only recourse is the courts."
County Public Information Officer Darryle Purcell said he was unaware of the suit. The county does not discuss legal actions that may be pending against it, he said.
"However, we believe in the justice system," he said.
"That (a lawsuit) is the civil way of settling things," said Walker.
The new policies were instituted during the Monday Board of Supervisors meeting.
In November, Golden Valley resident Luca Zanna was asked to stop passing out flyers before a town hall meeting held by Sen. John McCain at the County Administration Building.
Zanna was told his actions violated a county policy.
The county did not have a written policy against the public passing out flyers, signature petitions or other political activities until Monday.
The Board also approved a weapons policy on Monday that requires all deadly weapons to be checked in and securely locked up by security before a person can enter the main part of the county building.
The policy was instituted after resident Mervin Fried attempted to enter the county building with a pitchfork during a protest in front of the building on Feb. 16.
The Board has also established a dress code Monday, one which prohibits people from wearing tank tops, muscle shirts and halter-tops, among other items.

@nnp nnp: So you think that you can say whatever you want, whenever you want, wherever you want just because it isn't specifically written in the Constitution that you can't? People like you is why they have to put disclaimers on everything. "Do not try at home," "tickets not to be taken internally", etc.

Ica rus,
I don't recall the constitution listing the rules to freedom of speech, can you share those with us? Boy, you must be a part of the BOS because they don't seem to get either.

SECURITY CORRINATOR I was just wondering at first this position required a P.O.S.T. (police officers &standards training) certificate that was dropped when it was discovered that a certain somebodys brother did not have one. Then the physical exam was not required and yet the security corrinator is going to be carrying a gun, and could get into a physical confrontation with an offender and he/she is not required to have a physical exam to see if they are physical/mentaly fit to due the job. maybe there is an underlying physical problem with somebodys brother that would prevent him from being hired in the first place, so that was dropped also. it is also a violation of mohave county merit rules for the board of supervisors to approve the hiring of a family member who is going to be under the direction of another family member. i guess they will change that part also.

@Thomas Provided: First it's interesting to see that you use different names, second here is your quote:"Don't you care that an American was kept from exercising his right to freedom of speech?" endquote. That is what I was responding to. Just because there is freedom of speech it does not entitle someone to say what they want, when they want, and where they want, it has to be tempered with logic and rules. I'll try to type slower for you in the future so you can keep up with the rest of the class.

To Ica Rus. You seem to have a difficult time sticking to facts. When did I say you should be able to say whatever you want, whenever you want, etc? A prudent amount of time...say 3 minutes of respectful speaking from citizens at Council Meetings, etc. should be allowed. Who said anything about movies and church? No, I turn my cell phone off during church and quietly watch movies. You are a strange one. What are you going to think up now? That I want to go down the street screaming "fire?" Try to temper your own statements with some semblance of logic.

@Thomas Paine: Just because there is freedom of speech it has to be tempered with logic and rules, you are not allowed to say whatever you want, whenever you want, wherever you want. Or are you one of those people that talks during movies? Or answer your cellphone in church?

I have always wondered why the bureaucrats thought that someone wearing a t-shirt, or a tank top or someone who had long hair, was a terrorist who was going to draw a gun out of his/her mini-skirt and start shooting everyone in sight. The mentality of this premise is so insane that if it were not so serious, it would be laughable. What difference does it make what a person is wearing? Who thinks of this stuff? I try to look back. Was Sirhan Sirhan wearing a T-shirt, I wonder? What was the length of his hair? As far as history goes, it seems that most assassins were not known for their attire, rather by their actions. I cannot, for the life of me, understand where this comes from! So, what Sockwell and Walker and that bunch are saying is that an American who lives in Mohave County is not allowed to wear a tank top while entering into the hallowed walls of the County Building? First of all, what RIGHT do they have to tell ME WHAT TO WEAR? And, secondly, what are they going to do if I wear a T-shirt? Arrest me? What is the charge? "Brandishing a T-shirt?" Are they SERIOUS? Come on, people! We can't allow this to happen in our county. We HAVE to stand up to this. This is not right. We have to challenge this! Are we going to just stand here and let them tell us what to wear? Please! This is going TOO far! Zanna may have passed out McCain's voting record and scared these 'officials' under their beds with a flyer, but to retaliate by punishing the citizens of this county with this ricidiculous 'dress code' as if we were in kindergarten? This is making me angry!

Ica Rus. You have every right to complain about 'spam'...but that post is just to remind people of how necessary it is to be vigilant and not allow elected officials to let their 'power' corrupt them, as Sockwell and his bunch have done. Don't you care that an American was kept from exercising his right to freedom of speech? Don't you care that an American was not allowed to SPEAK at a Board Meeting. If YOU wanted to speak about your street if it had a pothole...or if YOU wanted to complain about something...YOU would have a heck of a time doing it since you are not allowed to pass out fliers or speak at meetings. Don't you care, Ica Rus? And if not...why not?
