Apnea group meets

KINGMAN - Kingman Regional Medical Center has a new Obtrusive Sleep Apnea support group.

The first meeting is at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the KRMC Mohave Conference Rooms. Todd Woodbury of ResMed Corporation is the guest speaker. Technical staff from the sleep lab will also be on hand to answer any questions.

For more information on the support group, contact Mark Hopkins, the clinical supervisor of the KRMC Sleep Disorders Center, at (928) 692-4144.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is caused by the closing of the upper airway while asleep. OSA causes a drop in one's blood oxygen saturation and an increase in the blood's carbon dioxide. When the blood oxygen drops the heart will start pumping more blood with each beat. If the blood oxygen continues to drop the heart will start beating faster and faster. As the carbon dioxide increases the brain will try to drive the person to breathe. The effort and the action of the abdomen and chest will increase, eventually becoming severe enough to cause the individual to awaken in an effort to breathe.
