Movie review: 'Expendables 3' sticks with what the franchise does best
'Expendables 3' – lots of guns and explosions, not so much character development.

For the Miner

Wow! What a cast of characters! Just about every action film hero is here: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Wesley Snipes, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson and Jet Li. Antonio Banderas is also a part of the crew with Ronda Rousey as a hand-to-hand combat expert.

With this group of characters, everyone is an expert in all things heroic.

The movie isn't breaking any new ground. They are the good guys who battle the bad guys (in this case, Mel Gibson). It drops you right in the middle of the action at the start: Lots of explosions, shooting, fighting, a missile-firing helicopter and buildings blowing up.

Wesley Snipes even makes a joke about being in prison for tax evasion.

Stallone is still the boss of the group called The Expendables. He acknowledges the current heroes are getting old and it's time for new heroes. He recruits another group.

This is where the film slows down quite a bit. Kelsey Grammar is tapped by Stallone to find new recruits to go after Mel Gibson.

There is an overarching theme of getting rid of the old and bringing in the new, such as finding more technologically savvy ways of accomplishing a goal without the old way of brute force and firepower.

Here, you'll find good use of both methods.

If you like action films with great stunts, explosions and fights, you'll really enjoy "The Expendables."

If you're looking for an intriguing storyline with developed characters, you might want to see something else.

I can see "The Expendables" franchise continuing either on the big screen or in TV movies. But it probably won't be with stalwarts like Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Lundgren or Ford.

If you want to have fun at the movies, see "The Expendables III." I'll give it 3.5 Miners out of 4.
