Kingman Letter: Different data on federal pensions

Regarding the Nov. 17 letter from Lori Gabriel-Dane, I would hope that Ms. Dane would stop getting her information from a blog on the Internet. Maybe then she would write a letter that is true rather than one she wants others to believe.

Senators and Congress members do not get their full salary for life after one term in office.

Members of Congress are covered by the same plan as other federal employees. Since 1984, they belong to FERS and they contribute 1.3 percent of their salary into FERS and 6.2 percent into Social Security.

They are not eligible for a pension until they are 50 but only if they have 20 years of service. After 25 years they can retire after age 62. They must have at least five years to receive a pension. The amount of their pension depends on the years of service and the average of the highest three years of their salary. The starting amount of a member's retirement annuity may not exceed 80 percent of their final salary.

According to the Congressional Record service, 413 members of Congress were receiving a pension based fully or in part on their congressional service as of Oct. 1, 2006. Two hundred and ninety retired under CSRS and were receiving an average annual pension of $60,972. One hundred and twenty-three retired with service under both CSRS and FERS or with service under FERS only. Their average annual pension was $35,952 in 2006.

Quite a difference from what Ms. Dane stated.

The rest of her rant is not all true either, but as space does not permit, I will not address it here.

James McCoy

"chuckles, its still a disgusting thing to have in our country. and i know it is a republican idea. whats your point? its still disgusting, i dont care who came up with it."

So, you think that making sure everybody can get health care is a bad thing? I see.

You normally go on and on about how awesome and smart Republicans are, now you back track on this one. LoLoL

"that they would approve of fining people in order to pay for others healthcare,"

The tax/fine/whatever it is called this week is not to pay for others healthcare, sorry. It is something you are charged when you don't purchase your own healthcare.

And since we are on that subject, keep in mind, that is a Republican idea, not a Democrat idea.

One thing for sure the Mohave gang of birthers, secessionists will be trusted to chime in on their belief they are winning the majority view in America! I guess delusions of grandeur are grand indeed! 32% does not equate to 50.1%, at best they can win some elections when hte mood of the 68% who do not register with them vote with them which might be a long time from now!

anson, ill point out why you have a twisted perception of things. you actually think that the founders of this nation would approve of the things the left does. you think that they would support higher taxes, you think that they would approve of fining people in order to pay for others healthcare, you think that they would support the government bailing out private businesses. but its not true at all, and if you would like to claim that it is, and stick by what you say, i will gladly inform you otherwise. with facts and quotes directly from them. that is why you live in an unaware state of twisted ignorance and perception.

"If you are going to attack me, I demand that you be accurate in your response"

You "demand"? LoL. That's rich. I'm still waiting for you to name who i made "death threats" against. I guess accurate respones just don't apply to you.

Hey, have you made that call to the cops yet for my "threats"?

LOL

“Good letter, as always, liberals like Mrs.L.G-D, D. Baker, A. Nephew and others can find a website that agrees with their twisted perception of reality on just about every subject, and they try to constantly push their alternate reality on others.”

I will now challenge you to point out where I have a “twisted position … on just about every subject.”

If you are going to attack me I demand that you be accurate in your response.

Being busy I missed LGD's letter and the responses. Nice of her to apologize however.

This reminded me of something. Not Congress but my Mother worked her entire life in the Mohave County Court House on Spring Street. From about 18 until about 63 when she retired.

It even included a stint as Clerk of the Superior Court when she wasn't even 20 as the elected Clerk was found hanging in the vault I believe was the story. She was appointed until the next election since she worked there.

For many years, I think 24 or so, she was County Recorder. I never asked about her retirement or finances. She was steady, together, private, frugal, cheerful and she saved. Yes, she remembered the depression. I did know, back then, Recorder's made little. Hopefully, that has changed.

I don't remember a single day she missed work - often went in on Saturdays to catch up in the quiet.

When she got Alzheimer's, I moved her to TX and cared for her in my home for 10 or more years. That included her business dealings.. Imagine my surprise to discover, she received about $68 a month retirement for all those years. Yes, years back but still - not much.

I finally understood why she had never bought herself a nice home. What she did have was coming from a great family and lots of lifetime friends.

To James McCoy:

I have already apologized for my error in a response to the many posters who told me I was wrong on many points. I also admitted that I received the information I posted from a close friend of mine and had little reason to doubt it, so that was my bad for not researching it before writing a letter to the Editor, and I apologized for that. If you'd like me to shoot myself for making a mistake, just let me know, okay? Jeeez! You'd think that I was the only one on here who ever posted something incorrectly. I normally research everything I post. Why I didn't do it this time is beyond me. But, believe me, it won't happen again.
