Reader Letter: Union guys don't vote GOP

I am Union. Therefore, I do not vote Republican.

It was a Democratic controlled government that gave us the right to join together and bargain collectively for wages and working conditions, that gave us Social Security, unemployment benefits and other social safety-net programs, and in 1965 Medicare, also work-place health and safety regulations through OSHA.

Unions gave us a better standard of living. Unions gave us the eight-hour day, the forty-hour week - job security means the right to not be fired from a job without cause - living wage means higher negotiated raises pushed up community wages - negotiated benefits that spread to non-union workers as well, holiday pay, vacation pay, health and life insurance, pension benefits, and even the bathroom break.

Republicans are almost universally anti-union, ergo anti-worker. How anyone who has ever benefited from any of the above can vote Republican is beyond me!

“I said that I have belonged to three unions and got stung by all three, but of course our local idiot had to try to make it out I even about that, but it is true.”

Hey, that’s me – “LOCAL IDIOT!” Cool name-calling from someone who refuses to admit that the three unions he loves to badmouth secured his wages, his pension, his benefits, his 40 hour work week, overtime pay, and paid vacation along with a safe work environment and even coffee breaks.

“It is hard to believe that so many people have followed this so called leader down the socialistic, commie like road....”

Obama won, deal with it. Geeze but you whiners grow old fast. And mentioning socialism why are you drawing social security and using Medicare? If I was that opposed to socialism I would not be accepting either one.

“I think your name pops up more than anyone's, so evidently you don't have anything better to do but try to stir up anger with you liberal rants.’

Actually Ms Athens beats me by almost three to one. And why do insist that my “rants” are Liberal? If I post the facts that disputes garbage put up by Right Wing Loons, that is not a “liberal rant” but a correction of misinformation

”I think I read that you said common sense is not taught in universities and you are right there, they are to busy teaching liberalism and brainwashing our kids....they grow up to learn better, evidently you didn't.”

Actually the better educated a person is the more accepting they are of varying thoughts, concepts and ideas and the more willing hey are to pursue the truth, rather than rely on the meandering prattle of some individual that gets their information from chain e-mails.

“You being a left wing obama loving liberal when are you going to get some common sense?”

Hmm, that sounds like an insult to me, but of course were that true the web-admin would have never let it through, which would allow me to respond by saying that your inability to comprehend the truth leave your severely bereft of even a modicum of common sense.

Good letter and I could not agree more. The people who write in bragging about the unions are the ones that took the system for large retirements and to heck with the rest of the country, which they helped destroy!

Unions are now just a political arm of the Democratic Party. They were needed before OSHA, minimum wage and a host of other federal agencies and laws that protect the worker. Now they are like the tick that rides its host and bleeds it dry, till it drops dead. Recently I heard the Hostess union strikers on camera say that “Without us there would be no company.” Another stated that the workers owned the company. Wow. I wonder if I went to their house and worked on their toilet, or if I worked on their car, I could then hold the bathroom and car hostage for more money because I now owned them. The unions were and still are of Communist roots and ideology, hence the mentality that the “workers” own the company. Twenty years ago I could barely afford the American Union made essentials for my family. Now that the unions have forced so much manufacturing overseas, the American dollar goes 4 times further than when the unions had a death grip on the American consumer and goods. The Soviet Union was just that, a giant union. It had the same ideas, goals and caste system. You’re told what to do, that and nothing more. Do your job no better or worse than your comrade. Do not excel. Unions were needed now they are a detriment to America.
Like a snake swallowing his own tail, the unions mindlessly consume body, soul and membership with an endless hunger and greed, while they negotiate workers out of work and business out of business then moving on to the next shop to unionize and milk dry. Maybe their self-demise is the best thing that’s happened to the American consumer. They won’t be missed.

@ A Smith

I attempted twice to post (and it was censored … uhh deleted) about my misunderstanding of your father’s commitment to his nation when he went to Vietnam as a contractor. And thank you for the further clarification that he served in WW2.

“I have always felt bad for those who went to Viet Nam. I have a cousin with schrapnel still in him, my brother-in-law was there. That war was a no win situation---that seems to be the name of the game in these modern time wars.”

I too still carry shrapnel that will at time work its way to the skin surface. And yes, Vietnam was a major mistake that had no potential as a win (after all the French had been fighting for years and years before leaving and or taking over). And I have to agree that our present wars – foisted on us by a lying criminal – have a no win to them as well. And on that point I would like to mention that on my radio show for over six years I asked the questions, “What exactly will we WIN in Iraq or Afghanistan? And if we LOSE what exactly will we LOSE?” Never an answer. But we have lost thousands of our troops and billions of our dollars – but somehow those never seem to count.

Well, you would get me for that one-NO serving your country is not a dumb thing to do when it is not for the big bucks-My dad had served his country in the navy in the 40s, he went to Viet Nam in late 60s-and YES that was a dumb thing he did. He worked for LBJ Construction CO. Why do you think that war lasted so long-LBJ is why!

I have always felt bad for those who went to Viet Nam. I have a cousin with schrapnel still in him, my brother-in-law was there. That war was a no win situation---that seems to be the name of the game in these modern time wars.

“What do you do, look for my name and then look for something that you can underline and refute to make you look like some sort of bafoon?”

Nope, your words jump off the page with ignorance (Is that allowed? After all being called a buffoon is not exactly within the rules) and I respond.

”When I said the Unions did nothing for me, I meant it… I doubt seriously if the unions did a whole lot to bargain for me as the jobs I had would have paid pretty well with out thier two cents.”

But you don’t know that for a fact, right? And your words indicate that what I said, to wit, “So none of those unions bargained for your pay? Your benefits package? Your retirement package? Vacation time? Safe working conditions? Paid overtime?” is indeed accurate.

If you are unhappy with my responding to your litany of posts then don’t post – it’s as simple as that.

When I said the Unions did nothing for me, I meant it, as I paid my dues, never met anyone from union leadership and when I needed their assistance no one showed up. With the strikes I went out on and lost practically everything and went deeply in debt, where was the union to help.
I doubt seriously if the unions did a whole lot to bargain for me as the jobs I had would have paid pretty well with out thier two cents.
The more I think about it, I truely hate the unions and I hope rational people can help destroy them.
The only reason the unions have made a slight come back is that our great socialistic president has given them lots of tax payers dollars and now they think they have some leverage but they are sadly mistaken.

I am a fool, so I vote without thinking. I support organizations which have been fleecing this country for more than 100 years. Unions have given us a higher cost of almost all products made in the U.S. currently. unions have leeched the lifeblood from companies who have been around for decades. (Anyone had a Twinkie lately?) Unions did their best to put the car industry out of business, luckily, they had cronies high up in the gov't (Our Whiner-In-Chief namely), who gives the industry which was failing BECAUSE of union thuggery, to the thugs, themselves, but then has to inject hundreds of million of taxpayer $$ into it to keep it looking like it is even afloat. One thing we unions absolutely do not do is maintain workers rights. The federal govt has passed much legislation regulating working hours and conditions, to the point that all unions do now, is drive up the costs of products only for the purpose of supporting the union itself. The vast majority of unions spend less than 1% of the dues collected by their members for anything other than paying the salaries of the unions hierarchy and organization. Just think, that American car you purchased this year (or last) would've cost about $3000-$4000 less than you payed, and would've been a better quality, if our unions would keep its greedy fingers out of OUR products.

Not quite the same as "serving your country" (in uniform) necessarily.

yes, conservatives are stupid because we dont believe in handing out fake money with no value backing it to simulate a strong economy before it collapses. why else are we dumb...hmmm oh yeah we dont believe in spending money we have on things we dont need. were just so weak minded and dumb in that way. if we were really smart like liberals we would print as much fake money as we can and buy things we dont need and crush the economy with a weak over inflated dollar and spread that wealth around so everyone can maybe feel all warm and cozzy on the inside with a socialist ran state, that would be the smart thing to do.

My Dad belonged to teamster union for years and years as a master diesel machanic. His dues included teamster retirement pay. He went to Viet Nam (a really dumb thing he did) and worked for (of all things) LBJ construction for 7 yrs..When he came home in I guess 1975, when everything went to hell and ALL Americans had to get out of there, he worked union but when he retired and applied for teamster ret. pay he was denied due to his 7yr. stint in VN. He was furious but, as far as I'm concerned he had no business in VN anyway.
Unions were a necessary tool in the early 50s. They became corrupt and more abusive than ever intended. They can turn father/son, brother/brother and others related against one another. They encourage workers to become liken to some monster fighting machine. With OSHA and other Fed. Dept. of Laws unions are obsolete and beyound usefullness!

@ Capt. Nice
There are plenty of things that have out-lived their usefulness and unions are one. Another program that has out-lived its usefulness is Affirmative Action. What really needs to be fixed in the US is the minimum wage. Fix the minimum wage and make it an across the board change wither you are working full time or part-time. Get that done and you may actually start getting some people off of assistance programs.

It is a shame that we have people in this country that are more interested in their own greed than their own country.
Nephew needs to look around as unions HAVE out lived their usefulness and it is the good companies that keep one step ahead of the unions that keep them weak.
I would like to know what the union has done lately for anyone other than keep obumer in office.
Like I said before, I have belonged to three unions and they did absolutely nothing for me
I was working next to a union trained electrician in Phoenix and he ask me to show him 3/8ths on a tape measure....shows you how phony unions are!.

You Bet, do you think maybe the reason husband and wife have to work is because union membership has drop to around 10%? It use to be that employers had to pay a living wage. Wages adjusted for inflation - figures from the Census Bureau for 2011 show that real household income (inflation-adjusted) fell by $2,492.while costs have increased .2%. When we were more unionized wages met if not exceeded inflation.

With all do respect, you are whats wrong with unions today. I am a 3rd generation Teamster myself. And I vote constitutional Conservative, or the most most conservative. And lately, the Democratic party hasn't given me a candidate to vote for.
Sorry, buy I vote for the best interest of my country, not so much my union.
