Guest Column: Clarity on 'assault weapons'
D.B. Mitchell
Valle Vista Resident

Assault weapon" is a phrase coined over 20 years ago by anti-gun zealots and gun control groups to stigmatize guns and vilify their owners. They intentionally misrepresented semi-automatic sporting guns as full-automatic military firearms in their efforts to ban all weapons. Like many lies from the left, the wording stuck, and the media began using it constantly. Some states banned certain rifles or required they be registered. Gun owners mocked the phrase, pointing out that virtually anything could be used in committing an assault and therefore could be considered an "assault weapon." So the left revised the term to "assault rifle," applying it to almost any shoulder-held firearm.

Citizens cannot legally purchase full-automatic firearms unless they have a special permit issued by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Those permits are rare, difficult to acquire and expensive. Such purchasers may be movie studios, avid collectors or special gun-owner organizations. It is grossly misleading to suggest that any Joe Whacko could walk into a local gun shop, pick out a full-auto AK-47 or AR-15, plunk down a wad of dough and walk out with it. It is surprising the gun shop owners featured in the Sunday, Dec. 23, Daily Miner article (about increased sales) didn't enlighten the reporter.

In the end, though, a semi-auto in the hands of a deranged, mentally unhinged person can still be devastating. Obama is successfully exploiting the Sandy Hook dreadfulness and so-called "ineffective gun laws" to implement stricter gun control regulations. His administration, along with anti-gun fanatics in the Senate and the House, are working overtime to bring legislation they hope will ultimately take all firearms away from citizens. A step beyond that is an Executive Order rescinding the Second Amendment. Secretary of State Clinton is busy working with United Nations bureaucrats to pass the Small Arms Treaty, a massive, global gun control scheme to register, ban and confiscate citizens' firearms. Witness the continuing dissolution of American sovereignty.

Did you even read the last paragraph? I don't think this was written by a far left author! It's completely a far right lie. Look up U.N. Small Arms Treaty @ Snopes.com. It has been debunked and last reviewed in November 2012 and it's still untrue!

@ D.B. Mitchell

Why would you want to put your name on something that has been debunked for years? More false hype that is not needed. I'm disappointed in you and the Daily Miner for even running it! Totally false!

There is no “legal way around the Second Amendment” other than a further amendment to the Constitution that repeals it or alters it, or a Supreme Court Decision that radically reinterprets how the Second amendment is to be applied. Furthermore, the President of the United States cannot enact a “complete ban on all weapons for U.S. citizens through the signing of International Treaties with foreign nations.

How could the Miner be so irresponsible in printing such ridiculous garbage without doing the research or a least flagging it as hogwash with a disclaimer?

As long as we're trying to set the record straight, lets start with the term 'assault rifle'.
It was coined much earlier than 20 years ago, and not by "anti gun zealots and gun control groups". Just splittin hairs but....
Any one who can legally purchase a firearm can, for more money and more hoops to jump through, purchase a fully automatic weapon. They are simply prohibitively expensive to buy. Just firing them is more than many can afford.
I think the main point needing clarification here is that an 'AR-15' type rifle had nothing to do with the tragedy in Newtown. Yes, the perpetrator of this act had one in the trunk of his car but didn't use it for any of the crimes he commited. Let that sink in.
I repeat.
That guy did not use an 'AR-15' type rifle.
Kinda reminds me of the iron clad, written in stone, irrefutable evidence of Saddam Husseins' WMD's and his connection to Al Kaida and the Taliban.
Anybody remember how that turned out?
I think the author above is correct but nobody's sayin what needs to be said over and over just like the "anti gun zealots and gun control groups" and that is 'The AR-15 was not used in Newtown'.

Nope, incorrect information. There is no such thing as a United Nations Small Arms Treaty and stating such an untruth immediately makes everything else posted suspect.

I am woting for the usual suspects to show up here spewing the nonsense I heard on the radio Saturday night that Sandy Hook was a fake and that no one died. It was reported by a dim bulb that the entire thing was a plot put together by Obama to push an anti-gun agenda. Of course when questioned the caller could not tell us where the families and children were – outside of some vague reference to them being sold to China.

Meanwhile, D.B. you’re the person I fear the most. A gun totting person who feels the right to bare arms means you can take a gun to everyplace. Meanwhile when the nut job does come in and shoots a bunch of people at a school or at Wal-Mart. Chances are it’s going to be my kid or even myself being killed by the cross fire from you and the nut job. Or it maybe the cops killing you because they wouldn’t know who is the nut job really is. You’re a proud gun owner, fine, but when I see you or others at the local store, proudly carrying, it makes less safe.

I doubt seriously if any person from the left paid any attention to your letter of facts as they are only interested in their one goal and that is the confiscation of guns...not the safety of our kids which can be done immediately.
It is kinda like obama and his obsession with gigging the rich (even tho he is rich) because he is jealous of people who actually work for their riches and it seems to be a liberal theme.
I remind people that in 1927 some lunatic bombed a school killing lots of kids and wounding more than 50 people...but I guess bombs don't matter, as it isn't on their agenda.
It would be nice to see some common sense come from the left but so far it is like they have blinder on.....or just blind!

Reagan was shot with a cheap revolver often called a saturday night special, Hinkley was insane, hence we got the 10 year ban on assualt weapons which was sunset and expired, this will fizzle in time, sadly my far left party members in my democratic party feel their oats from time to time and think us moderates in the democratic party will follow them into political suicide but they are mistaken!
