Letter: Columnist needs his head examined

The April 7 Miner included a column written by Alan Choate, "Gun decisions driven by fear." Mr. Choate seems to think that there are gun nuts here in Mohave County who are forcing the county to make very bad decisions.

Not only does he contradict himself in this article, he has no clue as to why people are upset. He states that gun-free zones have nothing to do with shootings since the shooter has "reached the breaking point" and wouldn't have the smarts to pick out a gun-free zone. If he had done his homework, he would know that all but the Gabby Gifford's shootings were done in a gun-free zone. Coincidence? I don't think so. In fact, the Colorado shooter picked a movie theater that was the farther from his home because it was the only one that was a gun-free zone.

He also states that this fear is not real and it's likely never to happen. If that's true, why is he so upset about something that will likely never take place? If I "fortify my roof against a meteor strike," even though the chances are slim that I will be hit with one, I haven't done any harm, have I?

Last but not least, Mr. Choate gives his solution to the problem by stating that we need "metal detectors, armed guards, armed school officers and thorough background checks." If he really thinks a government that isn't capable of running a post office can decide whether he is mentally stable enough to carry a gun, I am hoping he is first on their list to be checked. After reading his piece I'm not sure he is capable of writing an editorial.

So, amaryllis, or Jimi, or Linda, whichever name you were using for your post, I forgot.....we can conclude from your post that it is not your biblical beliefs but your just outright disdain and dislike of people that are different than you. Got it, thanks.

Doing no research...

Per capita is the amount of something in relation to the population of a certain area.

Percentage- the rate, number or amount In each hundred.

Per capita DIRECTLY translates into percentages. Therefor i stopped reading anything you said.

@TJ

...so which ARE you talking about, percentage or per capita? Those aren't actually the same thing.
This is an economies of scale kind of thing. You honestly can't expect that every aspect of life in a city is replicated on a smaller scale with a smaller population. Does Kingman have a commuter rail ....that only runs 1/4 a mile?

@Fear In the Eye
.....well you're the one that sounds scared here - you think there's a murderer hiding around every corner! My personal and unproved theories aside, let me ask you this: It's illegal to steal cars. Does that make it legal to booby-trap my car with a bomb if someone steals it? No. The point of having police is that we, as citizens, long ago delegated the responsibility of keeping the peace to them.

If Kingman is SO unsafe that you honestly 100% feel that you are in danger every moment of every day unless you have a gun on you, AND you feel that the likelihood of an accidental discharge is a reasonable risk to take - with OTHER people's lives - that balances that out, then you need to talk with the KPD.

But let's throw this out there:
2010 - 606 people killed from accidental discharge of a firearm.
2010 - justifiable homicide by private citizen 236.

Which means that for every 1 person killed in self-defense by a gun, between 2 and 3 are killed accidentally by one.

To Nice Chuckle,

It is notsimply my biblical beliefs that I oppose homosexual behavior.
Just as smokers have been demeaned, critized and belittled for their action due to cost of medical care because of lung cancer ect., ect., homosexuality is an even greater issue economically and being potentially a lethal disease that is capable of being spread not just through the act of sex but fluids as well. When HIV first came to light medical persons would tell people it could only be contracted by sex. That could not be further from the the truth.
Have you ever worked in an environment where you had to deal with someone infected with HIV?
Didn't think so.
I have interacted with "Gay" people such as a cashier in a store setting. They are polite, never rude or arrogant or disrespectful in any way. And, I would never be so to them!!
It isn't simply the moral aspect-thereis much more to it. I have wondered and wondered why there have never, to my knowledge been any studiy on hormonal treatment for those who are or think they are gay!

"Here's something for you to chew on reference morals. There is absolutely nothing better than being in a long term marriage that has trust between two people--I'm talking marriage between a man and woman monogamous, and fullfilling the physical needs and desires of each. That natural act of sex without having to worry about condoms or other contraption is the greatest experience of emotional, physical and mental well being on earth. Of course to experience that sensation you have to live a life of moral character!"

Again, you are trying to push your morals off on other people. We still have the freedom to choose how we wish. Being a straight male myself, I am in no way threatened by homosexuals in any way at all, not sure why you are.

PS. Amaryllis/jimi/linda whichever one you are right now, if you watch Fox to hear truth, you are sorely missing out. Fox is the ONLY "news" channel that had their right to lie argued in court.

Ms Smith

“As for te abortion doctor on trial--it wasn't until FOX News pushed mainstream media that they finally started reporting on it.”

Nope, as usual incorrect information. Tracking the story shows the print media was first to report the story and nationally CNN picked up the story before FAUX News.

“Fox news also had obtained some pictures of the mutilated babies he killed but, because they were so graphic opted not to subject the viewers to them.”

I seriously doubt that because FAUX News is well known for disgusting images.

“Because I want to hear the truth and nothing but the truth coming out of some news commentator's mouth-I watch nothing but Fox News!”

Which explains volumes as to where the distorted stories you post here come from. Remember FAUX News was the only “news” organization to go to court and demand the right to lie about, make up and distort the news.

Since you agree with Linda I will now ask you to tell us – because Linda refuses to do so – exactly what punishment you would inflict upon a woman who has an abortion? Be specific because no matter what a bunch of meddlesome busybodies do abortions will continue. So please, feel free to answer the question.

“Did you hear the one about the abortion Dr on trial where the baby was born alive and he threw it in the toilet?”

No I didn’t! And where did you find that story? Link please?

And since you are back with the your never ending litany of incorrect information about abortion I will ask you – again – to tell us exactly what punishment you would inflict upon a woman who has an abortion? Because – as I have said before – no matter the actions of a bunch of pathetic busybodies – abortions will continue. So since you have the time to pontificate here day in and day out about everything please take just a moment to answer that questions. And as always – don’t like abortion, don’t have one. In all ther cases mind your own business.

Chuckles:

Forget school. Was God thrown out of the country as a whole 30 years ago? No, He wasn't completely gone but God haters had a good start.

I am only Linda. I am 69 going on 70 and that is the only age I have ever used on here. And my age is absolutely meaningless to anyone so why you brought it up I know not.

Did you hear the one about the abortion Dr on trial where the baby was born alive and he threw it in the toilet? He/she flapped her arms and legs in the water, alive, gulping so they took the baby out of the toilet and snipped the baby's spinal cord and killed her/him.

One was so big when born, the Dr put him/her in a box with a lid on it. The baby was breathing, even rolled on it's side. He saved the baby for later, then killed it.

There are pictures of this baby in the box on the internet. A beautiful, fully developed little child, made in God's image.

The Dr trained others to snip born alive babies spinal cords. He also decapitated their heads and feet and collected them. Kept them in a freezer on the premises until a janitor couldn't take it and forced him to remove them. The Dr. missed his calling. He should have worked in a Nazi concentration camp.

I am a Christian but far from perfect. Therefore you will forgive me when I say I hope this Dr rots in hell.

"Funny, none of this was really a problem until we threw God out of everything which took morals with it and suddenly, with no moral compass to help us resist drugs, hate, stealing and worse, we have these new problems."

Now, Linda/Jimi/Amaryllis, God was out of school and most other things when I went to school some 30+ years ago, and somehow that still was not a problem. Oops...wrong on that one.

"Take the abortion Dr case going on right now that the MSM has completely ignored."

Jimi/Linda/amaryllis...I already told you once before that I heard about this story on NBC...and yet you still try to push this misinformation.

"At nearly 70, "
So, how old are you really? I have seen you say other times you are over 70, under 70 now. Which is it?

And just for the record...if it is wrong for a back ground check and such to purchase a gun, why are people like you asking for similar things to register to vote? Some hypocrisy knows no bounds.

@ Jack Anderson

The Second Amendment gives the people the right to bear arms. The verb, bear, means to carry.

Any store owner, ( whether it is an individual or corporation), has the right to specify that people may not carry guns into the premises.

Guns protect us, first, by being a deterrent. If I am bearing my gun a mugger will be less likely to pick me as a victim.
Leaving my gun at home in a safe does not accomplish the same effect.
If several customers at Starbucks have guns holstered on their hips an armed robber would be less likely to rob the cashier at that Starbucks.

@Fear in the Eye of the Beholder

The funny thing is that Research commented in another thread about the recent knifing incident at a Texas university that the law prohibited anyone from carrying a knife or a gun onto a campus. He then stated, "so much for knife free zones", (referring to the fact that the law did not stop the student from bringing the knife and stabbing people).

In this thread he is claiming that having gun free zones prevents the chance of fights escalating to the point of the participants shooting each other.

When ones argument lacks logic, one is more likely to contradict one's self.

it's true, when I was a young boy there were no school police or metal detectors, there were occasional unregulated fights and other abuses. On weekends, you could ride your bicycle or hike for miles out into ranchlands and hills, usually not running into anyone else but the occasional fellow solo explorer. The coins were silver, the cars were simple (though I was far too young to drive), and you could - and did - go a decade without ever seeing a cop. It wasn't perfect (what did I say about some abuses?). You could call the time 'unenlightened' in some important ways. Balance that with the presumptions of our present profligate, totalitarian police state, and I think we are much worse off, and getting worse by the day.

Jack Anderson:

They do have the right to carry their guns where and when they want.

Funny, none of this was really a problem until we threw God out of everything which took morals with it and suddenly, with no moral compass to help us resist drugs, hate, stealing and worse, we have these new problems.

That includes abortion of course and there has been violence and murder around abortion too. With morals, we had few abortions. That's because girls didn't sleep with every Tom, Dick and Harry. And many men didn't expect them to.

Take the abortion Dr case going on right now that the MSM has completely ignored. He killed about 8 born alive babies and killed one Mother. That didn't happen when God permeated our society.

So with our fabric badly tattered and torn, people see the need to carry guns for protection against those with no moral compass.

And as far as calling those people nuts, you are wrong. I have lived around people that carry guns my entire life such as ranchers, hunters, etc and they are usually the backbone of our society, not the real nuts that take innocent people out. At nearly 70, I am aware of only one gun accident and it was while deer hunting many years ago.

Incidentally, the gun bill that went down yesterday - obama is absolutely FURIOUS and I watched him twice on CSpan as he drug family members of gun violence out on the stage. He LIED saying it would NOT create a gun registry. It would. He wanted it as a wedge issue and his intent was it was to go down in the House, not the Senate so his own people foiled him and HE IS MAD. Lying often bites you back.

Yesterday, the senate correctly rejected King Barack's and his jefe', Boss Bloomberg's scheme to weaken citizens firearms rights.
However, the democrats defeated 3 commonsense amendments to reduce violence.

Amendment Number: S.Amdt. 725 to S. 649 (Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act of2013)
Purpose: To address gun violence, improve the availability of records to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, address mental illness in the criminal justice system, and end straw purchases and trafficking of illegal firearms, and for other purposes.

S. Amdt.720 to S.649:
Purpose: To protect the Second Amendment rights of veterans and their families.

S.Amdt. 719 to S.649
Purpose: To allow reciprocity for the carrying of certain concealed firearms.

Whose side are democrats on? They certainly don't stand up for veterans or law abiding citizens.
